Chance me does not work for schools like Stanford. Kids who are a URM, national merit finalist and legacy student have been rejected. 2400s have been rejected.. The whole process is a crapshoot.

Well, it’s not totally a crapshoot.

But yes, chance me threads are more or less useless for HYPSM.

In the eyes of the general (college applicant) public, it is a crapshoot. In the eyes of Stanford’s adcoms, I daresay it isn’t. Our judgments are based on a person’s test scores, GPA, EC’S, honors, etc. However, we don’t see the application. Therefore, our opinions shouldn’t be compared to adcoms who actually sit down and read an entire application, essays included. We tend to “chance” CC’ers more on objective factors, such as test scores, while adcoms are more subjective. If they like the applicant, regardless of test scores, they will probably admit them. Though let me point out that applicants with uber-low test scores are generally not going to be as well-liked as those with stronger scores. It makes sense when you think about it. They don’t want non-social nerds who study 500hours for that perfect 2400. Top schools typically want diversity of every kind in their student body. They want people with something different to offer, not just 2400’s.

So yes, chance me threads are not really that effective. Plus, some people can get pretty downright ugly.

Just because someone incorrectly predicts someone’s chances doesn’t make the process random.

I’m not going to debate whether or not it truly is a crapshoot or is random, but I do think chance me threads are pointless as we don’t see the full application and can’t predict anything.

Chance Me threads are not pointless. They are often helpful if the chancing contains advice from a seasoned poster here. Many are uninformed about the process and benefit from the chance threads.

No one claims the chance threads to be fully predictive.

I should clarify. I meant Chance Me threads are pointless in that we can’t predict whether or not the person gets in. If they benefit from the thread (as in, narrow down their college choices, decide to retake SATs, etc,) then it is beneficial… personally i think the name of “Chance Me” should be changed to something else XD. but that’s just my opinion.
