CHANCE ME, EARLY admission business major

I am going to be a high school senior this next year and want to know my chances of getting into Cal Poly with a business major since it is my absolute dream school. Here is some information about me…

-I live in the silicon valley (Bay Area, California), and go to one of the most prestigious high schools in the bay area, Valley Christian High School. (look it up) I am also taking AP Micro/Macro Econ, Trig, and Chem my senior year

-My sophomore grades were not that good as I did not try that hard. I got a 3.14 GPA.

I am extremely involved in photography and have placed in top 3 in nation wide contest.

I took 2nd place in the Josten’s Yearbook Company national photography contest… my photo that took this is linked here:

YOU CAN VIEW MY PHOTOGRAPHY HERE:

I also took that photo into the Alliance for Your Artist & Writers contest and recieved a gold medal. Only like 1500 out of 20,000 got this award, and my photo was sent off to New York and recieved a silver award out of those 1500 or so placers.

My junior year I took all college prep courses (and got a 4.17 GPA) except for an AP 2D art class and recieved a 3 on the AP exam.

I also have had 3 jobs…

(1st)job was at a local wine shop where I sold wine to retired NHL players such as Wayne Gretsky!!!

(2nd) Second job was at Zumiez Skate Shop

(3rd) And my last and current job is working for a start up entrepenurial company that my best friends dad started for him to make money. Its called Gen-Y-Labz, and I research business data for it as a 17 year old.

I HAVE NEVER BEEN FIRED FROM A JOB

I am also a member of the Entrepreneur club at Valley Christian High School. The club is led by one of the most famous figures in venture capitalism Kevin Compton. He is also a 50% owner of the San Jose Sharks, and will be writing us recommendation letters.

I have no doubt in my mind that all of these things will set me apart from other applicants, but feel that my sophomore grades will screw me over.

Summary:

Got a 1550 first time on SAT due to testing anxiety, but I can get an 1800 if i study hard this summer

3.65 average GPA, and i can get a 4.0 my first semester of senior year easily

3 outstanding jobs

Member of entrepreneur club and a very prestigious photographer for a high schooler

WHAT DO YOU THINK? WHAT ARE MY CHANCES OF GETTING IN WITH EARLY ADMISSION?

well I’m kind of in the same situation you’re in. I’m a high school senior and Cal Poly is my first choice and I’m going to do early decision majoring in business. I had pretty terrible grades Freshmen year, getting a 2.6 and 3.0, Sophomore year I had a 3.6 and a 3.8, and junior year i got a 4.0 and 4.2. I also have over 200 community service hours, play a varsity sport, and am co-captain of that team. Also, I plan on getting a 2000 on my SAT next time around (I got an 1850 back in May, but I know I can do better) Since this school is a polytechnic school it’s pretty oriented around math and science, so you’re gonna want a high SAT score, especially for math. Anyway, for anyone that stumbles upon this thread, I’d like to know my chances too.

I’ll bump this as I’m also interested in majoring in business at cal poly. 1680 sat 24 act, overall UW gpa of 3.81 and over W gpa of 3.97. I’m a rising senior with an upward trend grades-wise, getting a 4.33 both semesters of my junior year. I plan to study incredibly hard for the ACT and try to pull it above 28 (i’m bummed as I’ve become such an accomplished student, yet continue to be at the national average for standardized testing =/). I have a lot to talk about in my essays, and have overcome several significant obstacles which may give me some sort of pull in that category, and I’ve played soccer my entire life, possible help from that but not focusing on that aspect of my application.

Chance us all :)

as for you, Connor, your gpa is quite low, and you may want to swap out chem for physics as it appears as if colleges demand that more. I took ap chem last year and will be taking ap physics next year after hearing from many qualified sources that it’s strongly recommended. if you like photography so much you may want to consider that as a major, or if any majors are similar apply to those. i say that because you may be stressing your ability in the wrong category if you’re applying for business, since you can always switch majors after being accepted (but don’t quote me on that, just a suggestion).

@SoCalStudent3… About the essays, state schools don’t even look at your essays from my understanding. That’s just what my counselor told me. Anyway it just sucks that california schools are so hard to get into these days and that every student who applies is just another GPA/SAT score to them

yeah I agree, it’s aggravating having a low SAT/ACT: 1680 and 24 here on 1st and only attempts for each. All we can do is study and prepare as soon as possible in order to get a decent score, and stop it from damaging our chances

Cal Poly 2010 college of Business admitted freshmen stats:

Avg. GPA: 3.87
Avg. ACT: 29
Avg. SAT: 1284/1600 (CR + Math only)

I hope this gives your more idea of the requirements for b-school

I go to a private school in bay area (Valley Christian HS), and TONS of kids got in this year for business that were below that par GPA/SAT wise… As a matter of fact I knew like 3 in my bible class that had 3.7/1750(out of 2400) and got in with a business major (NOT early admission). Idk bro I’ll take my chances and apply early decision…

You know if its not meant to be its not meant to be, My life is already pre-destined and if Cal Poly isn’t it then whateverrr

I got in with a 1960 SAT and 4.1! cal poly is amazing I’m so excited, good luck everyone! It really depends with cal poly I knew some people with mediocre stats who got in! Early decision def helps though.
