Okay so, I'm a ninth grader applying for tenth grade. I haven't gotten my SSAT scores back, but they're supposed to be here today. I think I did well on the math but I'm not sure about the vocab section. I hope so though! Right now I go to a prep school with nearly the same academic standard as Andover and Exeter, and I don't have straight-A's. Will they be aware that it's a hard school?

For extracurriculars, on my Gateway to Prep Schools page I wrote down that I am in the highest choir at my school, I play field hockey, piano, guitar, golf and AYSO soccer. I do a lot of community service, I sing in solo vocal shows and I love photography. I just realized that I forgot to add that I am on the Track and Field team, so is it okay if I put that in the extra information section on the essay page?

The problem is my grades aren't straight - As... I have never gotten a C but I have gotten a B-.

So in 8th grade I finished the year with an
A - Drama workshop
A - Vocal Ensemble
A- - English
B - Chinese
B - Algebra 2
B+ - Science
A- - World Civilizations
A - Debate
A - P.E.

Then in 9th grade for first quarter I got a

A- -Madrigals (choir)
A- -English
A- -Chinese
A -French
A -Geometry
B- -Biology
B+ -World&Europe

Do they only see my first quarter grades? Because I think my semester grades will be better but yeah...

My interview went well, I think, and I think that my essays are pretty good...

So what do you think my chances are?

(Also I'm sorry if any of this came out like rude or conceited or something... I didn't mean for any of it to sound like that)

If you score in the 85%ile or above on the SSAT, I think you have a chance. I don’t know about Exerter, but Andover really likes community service, so you might have a better chance there.

good job photograpygirl! I think you definitely have a chance at these schools! I mean, they are a reach for everyone, and I mean EVERYONE.
yeah the scores that are sent in are your semester grades not quarter grades. For quarter grades I had two Cs to im asking for my semester grades to be sent because Ive brought them to a B and and A+.

wow you look pretty qualified photography girl! the grades are great and considering you go to a high quality prep school even better! and the low vocal section on the SSAT’s shouldn’t mess you up because of the 94%ile overall

hey photography girl
gratz on having a great application but I first want you to know that however it comes off, I don’t mean to offend you or anything. But I applied to Exeter and Andover last year so I think I can give you a pretty accurate judgement.
Just to start off, I was rejected. I had a really versatile application like you, sports, music, community service, etc.
I would actually worry a bit about your SSAT test scores though. Like you, I applied as a freshman to go into 10th grade. My scores were:
Verbal: 791(97th percentile)
Math: 800(99th percentile)
Reading 698(73rd percentile)
Overall: 2289(97th percentile)
But what I learned is that they don’t necessarily look at your score. They look at your percentiles. Actually, I called my interviewer after I got my reject letter and asked her what was wrong with my application. She told me the ONLY reason I was rejected was because of my 73rd percentile Reading score, even though I got 97th percentile overall. Any other year, or even if I simply applied as a repeat freshman, I would have gotten in. In any case the competition to get in WILL NOT lessen. Look at the application stats and see how quickly they rise. It’s a bit late to worry about it, so I’ll just say good luck.

In response to the above poster… Andover really doesn’t out a specific reason why one would be rejected. I was at least under that impression. Especially given my situation:

I was a perfectly qualified applicant (I’m sure you can find my chance thread somewhere), but my SSAT scores were subpar. Verbal, 99%; Reading, 78%; Math, 78%. 94% overall. (Don’t know how I got that overall score.)

Despite my SSAT score, which many would consider “too low,” I got in. My best friend, who got 99%s in every section, was rejected from Andover. SSATs do not carry enough weight to ruin your application. Unless you get below a 75% in EVERY SUBJECT, then it doesn’t have too much sway in anything. A lot of schools use this as a way of checking to see how a student would fair at their school in comparison to others taking the test. They understand that some people have private tutors, while others don’t. This is what I have been told by admissions officers at Andover. (I’m a current sophomore.)

You got a fantastic score. Take a deep breath and don’t worry too much!
