Essays (rating 1-10, details):
COMMON APP ESSAY: I wrote about my grandmother being illiterate and how it has shaped my life so much ever since I found out (referenced Carol Dweck who is a Barnard alum who created the “growth mindset concept”). The people who read it said it was really good and made them cry of appreciation.
SUPPLEMENTALS:
Why Barnard: focused on interdisciplinary studies and growth at Barnard and how my IB experience can translate to the Foundations curriculum
Woman in History: Shobha Naidu ( a classical Indian dancer) and I talked about how I want to learn and as her questions about emotions in dance and how to relate ancient Indian dance to a global audience)
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
-TEACHER 1: IB English teacher, I think she wrote me a really good one bc she said she had a lot of great things to say about me (10/10 I think)
-TEACHER 2: IB history teacher, he knew me since freshman year and he said he talked about how much I’ve grown as a writer (since IB history is writing heavy) and idk if he mentioned this but I got a perfect score on the IB scale on a timed write for his class once (which is very rare) so I’m sure he said really good things (10/10)
- ADDITIONAL REC: My honors Spanish 4 teacher who sponsored Girls Learn International and she talked about how smart I am and how I extend that to the global community through my service (10/10)
- COUNSELOR REC: She knows me pretty well and she's super super super nice (I love her!) and I'm sure she said good things but I don't talk to her much besides for like academic reasons and she helped me with some personal stuff about how to overcome competition and not let it get to you (8/10 bc I honestly really don't know)
-INTERVIEW: I think it went really well! It was a Skype interview and she was an IB student too pursuing the same majors as I want to and she was super nice and chill and I presented myself well and made sure to ask her a lot of questions about the Barnard community and specific Barnard traditions so I think she knows that I really want to go there and have done my research
Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes but I don’t think I’ll get much bc my family is upper middle class in the midwest
Intended Major: Political Science, Human Rights, History
State (if domestic applicant): NEBRASKA!!!
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: Best Public school in the state and very competitive so I think my class rank of being in the top 10% might stand out
Ethnicity: INDIAN!!! JAI HO!!! lol
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: more than 100K
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): IB, extracurriculars, teacher recs idk
Reflections: I hope I get in but I just really don’t know
Strengths: IB program, extracurriculars, teacher recs
Weaknesses: rough freshman year, ACT score, I’m not that math driven and focus more on social sciences which I think will ruin my chances by a lot bc Barnard loves STEM students
