Chance me for Brown ED? will chance back!

Male, Hispanic/Filipino/Greek

SAT - CR: 750, M - 680(ew), W - 730, combined 2160(meh)
ACT - 30(ew)
Math I - 700
Math II - 650(gross)
Physics - 620(AH!)

My school doesn't have grades...so I can't really give you that stat. BUT I will say that it would (hopefully) convert to a 4.0 unweighted. My reports are written in narrative form and have always been complimentary and very good.

Junior classes: Cognitive Science, Chemistry, Physics of Waves, Spanish Seminar, Topics in American Literature, Politics of Race and Gender in American History, Advanced Topics in Music Theory, Analytic Geometry, Differential Calculus, Writing Intensive Thesis Lab

Senior classes: Intro to Quantum and Relativistic Theory, Human Biology, Guys & Dolls pit band(Assistant Musical Director and Bass), Advanced Topics in British Literature, Advanced Topics in Modern European History, Integral Calculus, Advanced Topics in Calculus, Multidimensional Analysis.

Also did an independent study that was a comparison of systems of American education through digital photography in 10th grade.

In addition to senior classes, I'm also taking Basic Chinese pt I through Johns Hopkins' Center for Talented Youth (A average, my first grade!)

In school activities: Literary Magazine (co-editor), Yearbook(principle photographer), Rock & Roll Club(founder and bandleader), Scrabble Club, Jazz/Instrumental Ensemble(bandleader, guitar), Competitive Math Team(inaugural member), Photography Club, Old Time Music Group.

Other ECs - NYSSMA Jazz Evaluation Festival, Level 1 - 28/28, Level 4 - 26/28, All State - 97/100, Young Musicians Healing Haiti(see below for description), internship with Chief of Surgery at local hospital (spent time in his office as an assistant surgical technician, and time in the operating room as an observer), wrote for local newspaper as only Art & Music writer, was published probably 20 times.

Attended SPARK Program for Gifted Science Students at Brown in 7th grade, and Pre-College Program in "Putting Ideas Into Words" also at Brown in 9th grade.

Sports: Varsity Soccer, Varsity Basketball, Varsity Ultimate Frisbee(captain), recreational tennis & golf

Haiti thing: Since the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, I have been organizing benefit concerts for Haitian relief(duh). In March of 2010(concert 1), I raised $1500, March of 2011(concert 2), $900, and October of 2011(third and final high school concert), raised $4855, total of $7255. All of the proceeds have gone to a local organization with Vassar College called the Vassar Haiti Project. The money I donated is going to help rebuild the only music school in Haiti, Holy Trinity Music School in Port-au-Prince. I'm currently featured as a community member of the VHP, and in September of last year, I was honored by Vassar College and presented a check with the leader of the VHP to an executive member of Holy Trinity when a boys choir from the school came to do a concert at Vassar.

Sorry it's so long, but any ideas?

Oh also I play 6 instruments, don’t know if this helps.

And if you’re curious about the other schools I’m applying to, you can chance me for those too if you’re up to it: Colgate, NYU, BU, GWU, Wesleyan, Tufts, Haverford, Dartmouth, Harvard(lolz), Middlebury, University of Rochester and Union College/Albany Medical College LIM program.

I’ll chance back!

Hmm… I think your strengths lie in your diversity and EC’s. However, if you don’t have written grades I feel that the majority of schools will be forced to judge you by your standardized test scores (you may want to raise your SAT IIs.) Other than that I think that Brown is a low reach. Make sure you write strong essays.

I don’t have time to raise my SAT 2s unfortunately. blah. Thanks for the reply though! According to the two officer’s that I met that will apparently be reading my application, they say that they are specialized in reading the transcripts from my school, so maybe they won’t rely as heavily on my test scores? I don’t know, I’m just hoping for a deferral at this point.

Also, could you or anyone else chance me for any of the other schools as well?

well, you have excellent Ecs!! Your test scores are great, but increasing them (especially subject tests) would help. The fact that you are doing this ED helps and ur ethnicity also helps. I think you have a great shot! Good luck!! I hope u get in!

Brown is clearly going to be a reach. As much as it hurts to hear, the subject tests will probably be the killer, if anything. How are your essays? Recommendations?
Regarding your other schools, I think you have 90%+ chance of getting into Colgate, NYU, BU, GWU, Union, U of R.

Your EC’s are awesome, and will probably overshadow your test scores, especially if your narrative style transcript reflects well.

Wesleyan, Tufts and Haverford are all match schools: probably 50/50 at each.

Middlebury, Harvard and Dartmouth are obviously reaches; however, I believe you have a solid chance at each school

Good Luck!

Also, do you plan on participating in music in college?..that will help.

I absolutely plan on participating in music. I was contemplating a double major in Neuroscience and Music whilst on a pre med track, not sure how that’ll work out though. And I figured the subject tests would be the roughest part. I’ve taken them bunches of times and I just can’t seem to do well, so I sort of threw in the towel after awhile. You win some you lose some I suppose. I hate talking about my essays because they’re so subjective, but I think they’re pretty solid, not works of literary art or anything, but they definitely depict my personality (as well as something can in 500 words) and hopefully my motivation. My letter of rec are hopefully great, one from my Cognitive Science/Bioethics/Molecular Bio teacher whom I’m very close with, and the other from my History teacher whose class I did very well in (I’m also close with her). My counselor recommendation I would presume is great, considering I’m graduating in a class of 19 students, so we all know each other pretty well and he’s also the head of the English department so I wouldn’t worry about that one. I have two additional recommendations, one from the leader of the Vassar Haiti Project, and one from the surgeon I worked with this summer, and I would presume those are good too. And I know Brown is nearly impossible, but I’ve loved the place since 7th grade and no matter how many times I try to find other options, Brown always comes out on top. There’s no harm in trying, I suppose. I hate talking about myself on these things, I feel so narcissistic! Thanks so much for your comments though!

Oh also my school has no APs, so that should be cleared up so I don’t look like I’m not trying. “Advanced Topics” courses are supposedly at or above AP level courses and are not designated as such because they simply don’t follow the same curriculum.

I think that Brown will be a low reach for you. Your extra-curricular activities are coveted. However, your SAT scores are average for those going to Ivy league schools. And your SAT 2 scores, are kind of below average for Brown. It’ll be difficult for Brown to judge you because your school has no grades.

Chance back?

Brown is one of the Ivies where I think you can get away with SAT II scores that are sub-par. I think you will at least be deferred and who knows from there!

Good luck! You will do well wherever you end up! Care to chance back?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1245689-chance-me-nyu-bu-brown-harvard.html#post13484902

Brown seems to be the ivy with the most laid back attitude, hence the reason I like it so much, so maybe my subject tests will be overlooked and more emphasis will be put on my community work. Thanks again for your input!

More opinions maybe?

Please chance me?

Since it’s an Ivy, It is really hard to tell. However, my cousin got in with a 2050, 4.0 UW GPA, and pretty good extra-curriculars. With your stats, it seems like you’ll get in. The SAT II’s might hurt you; but otherwise, I would say you have a 70-80% chance of getting. Good luck to you :)
