AP’s: 6
World History:4 (Will have Language and Comp, US History, Economics, Literature, Physics B)

EC’s:

I have played jazz guitar for the past 2 years as well.
Latin Club- 4 years- Class Officer
Economics Club- Stock Exchange team leader

Researched a gene on the smell and perception of sweat molecules in my molecular biology class.
Also identified two genes that correlate to schizophrenia between worms and humans.

Volunteering:
I have volunteered for an optometry organization for the past 2 years and I help to write lenses for people in third-world countries. I plan to go on one of their retreats to South America this summer.

Essay: I have a speech impediment (called stuttering) which I’ve battled throughout my whole life. I plan on talking about how I “found my voice” and became a liberal living in a conservative community where I felt comfortable voicing my opinion. Stuttering has shaped who I am as an individual and I would like to showcase how this makes me different from everyone else applying to these top schools. I plan on talking about embarrassing difficult moments and opportunities lost (all the sad stuff). And then I’m going to shift and talk about how this is really a painful work in progress with no fairytale ending as of yet.

Recs: Will be excellent. My AP English teacher is almost like a friend to me and he has seen me struggle, but also realizes my great potential and ability to write. The other will be from my Latin teacher, who I’ve had since 7th grade, and has seen me progress in becoming more comfortable participating in her class.

your weighted GPA is a bit low. Considering your AP classes it should be >4.8-5.0
Your ECs look good for the most part. If you can get your SAT to 2200-2250 or higher it would help a lot. But from this:

Brown- apply ED and try to get a higher SAT and W-GPA, it should work out

Johns Hopkins- work on SAT and GPA

Williams College- Same as above

Columbia (Legacy)- Looks alright,

Tufts - You should get it

Washington University in St. Louis- You should get it

George Washington- You should get it

Colgate- In easily

NYU (Law School Legacy)- You should get it

Tulane (Legacy) - In easily

btw, your essay is very unique. Should help a lot

Thanks halfcupofpudding, something to note is that my high school does not grossly weight APs and honors classes so the highest possible GPA at my school is like a 4.2. So, the 4.01 actually puts me in like the top 15 on high honor roll.

So, when I first read that your essay was going to be on stuttering, I had my doubts. Physical impediments are kind of cliched, as are illnesses, deaths, divorces, moving, etc. However, the fact that you put a political spin on it (“became a liberal living in a conservative community where I felt comfortable voicing my opinion”) makes it much more interesting. Therefore, I would emphasize that fact that you are trying to find your voice much more than the fact that you stutter (because college admission officers get sick and tired of reading about woe-is-me, my life is one big struggle, essays)

Also, get your SAT up…

Question, if you made “High Honor Roll: Every marking period of high school”, why is your GPA 3.85? Not that 3.85 is low, but if you got all A’s every term (assuming that’s what qualifies one for high honor roll at your school), I would think it would be a little higher.

Please return the favor by chancing me!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/690641-just-giggles-very-early-chance-me.html</a></p>

Your essay topic is not at all unusual. Every year myriad kids write about stuttering and all sorts of disabilities that challenge their lives. To pull off this topic you will have to have a very unique take on it and an inspiring story. It can’t just be the usual ‘I fight on’ story. Think Lance Armstrong…despite this I became the champion. Otherwise it’s just another ‘I struggle’ essay, and adcom are immune to them because there are so many.

There’s a young women floating around these boards who was surprised when college acceptances did not cut her any break for having fought two bouts with cancer. What everyone needs to realize is that a large percentage of essays surround significant life difficulties.

bumptybump

washu is not a match, if anything its a reach if you don’t show any interest, and tell them its your top choice…

JHU and WashU are need aware so if you don’t need FA, tell them that, and don’t apply for FA(i know that its obvious that if people don’t need FA they don’t apply for it, but some people who don’t need FA apply just to see how much they can get, (which I did, and turned out badly for me))…

Good chances everywhere. Worst at Brown and Williams, but still pretty good.

yeah but i think excelling with a disability is something colleges should consider. it could be just as hard as the kid from the ghetto who must walk an extra mile to the good school. all of these things should be taken into consideration. anyway, i agree that you shouldn’t just exploit your disability with a sentimental essay (no offense), but somehow mention it or something.

Jboxer7, I like your chances at all the schools you plan to apply to (Brown and Williams will be a bit tougher). If you just raise your Math SAT I score (to like 730), I think that you’re chances are much better. My school calculates GPA almost like your school, so I know how hard it is to achieve a high weighted GPA.

I think that your basic essay topic is great, just make it more unique than the hackneyed sob stories! Overall, I like your chancs and good luck! :)

BTW, can you chance me (thread is called “Any chance at Ivy League”), I would appreciate it! Thanks! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/693094-any-chance-ivy-league.html</a></p>

i’m not too familiar with all the schools you chose, plus some of the admissions for those schools are pretty random but i’m guessing at gwu you are in, and tulane is a definite yes probably with a scholarship also

bump any other ideas?

what does BUMP mean???

bump means: bring up my post

i don’t know much about these schools or the SAT for that matter because where i am from we all do the ACT so im gonna say you’re in at gw tulane and nyu but i dont know about the rest not because i do not think you can get in but because i just dont know there admission policies etc
