Extra-Curriculars: In 9th grade I wrote and performed a song on guitar to underscore and accompany scenes in a student written play. In 10th grade I wrote a 45 minute musical which was produced at my school, I was the musical director and the pit leader/pianist. A local theater company has offered to produce the show this year and has asked me to direct. In 11th grade I wrote a 10 minute wind symphony which my school’s ensemble performed and which I conducted. All throughout my high school career I’ve been involved in my school’s theater ensemble, being in six school shows and having leads in three of them. This summer I am writing a song to go with a show that was written by my school’s drama class over 15 years ago, a show which we are performing next year. I have also done five shows with local theater companies, having three leads, including Tony in West Side Story. One of these theaters is free for everyone in my city and allows people to see theater even if they normally wouldn’t be able to afford it. Overall I have spent about 2000 hours doing theater. I am also on the Theater Board in my school, I was a Director at Large sophmore year and Marketing Director in 11th grade, which was the year we sold out every single show for two weeks straight. I was asked by Jordan Ruddess to create a promotional music video for the new X-Key air midi keyboard, a video which was forwarded to the CEO of the company who designed the product (I’m still waiting to see if anything happens with that). I wrote a choir piece which will likely be performed by my school’s chamber choir next year and I arranged an a capella version of “The Circle Of Life” which will definititely be performed next year. Other than music and theater, I did a little bit of speech and debate freshman year, but nothing too major.

Volunteering: for three years I played piano and sang at an old folks home about twice a month. Also, I am currently starting an organization that helps to connect education to community and build a larger bond between the two (I won’t say exactly what it is because without a copyright the idea is still confidential), in the hopes of a) helping more kids get into college b) teaching kids how to care about the community and the future generation c) help save my failing school from being taken over by the state.

Work experience: I have busked (played music on the street) every summer since I was 9 and I have done quite well, I’ve also been paid to play and sing at parties, restaurants, and retirement homes. I was hired by a prominent member of the nonprofit that runs the Erie Canal to arrange an a capella version of the Erie Canal Song.

I go to an ultra-diverse, inner city public high school, which is academically one of the worst in NY state.

I think you have a good chance of you apply ED. Good scores and GPA. Your ECs are very focused, but I don’t see why you would go to brown if you are so invested in theater. You would be a unique applicant because of your ECs, though. I would consider NYU or Yale if you want to pursue theater.

Thank you for replying so quickly! I actually would like to double major in music composition and psychology and do theater on the side.

Oh ok. I hear Brown has a stellar music program. I was planning to apply ED, but since I have legacy at Harvard, I think I’m going to apply SCEA there. Good luck!

I would respectfully disagree with the above statement.

There is so much theatre happening at Brown; much of it fueled by non-theater concentrators. Quite different from NYU, which is a collective of multiple private studios.

Yes, Yale has one of the top theater MFA programs in the country, but I don’t think the Brown undergrad theater scene is in any way inferior to Yale’s.

Best of luck @Rjayc101. Work hard on your application - Start now! Make sure it is highly focused and coherent. Don’t just haphazardly list everything. Allow time to set aside for a few days, edit, repeat. When your admissions officer reads it in 5 minutes how is he or she going to sum it up in 2 minute presentation to the committee?

Do you know your Brown regional admissions officer? Meet and talk when they visit your area. https://www.brown.edu/admission/undergraduate/visit/brown-in-your-town

Push the music in your essay, your application seems competitive. The music volunteering is smart.

@arwarw oh, my mistake. However, the OP does not want to pursue theater in college.
