Chance me for Brown?

Hi there!

Could you guys please chance me for Brown and these other schools? It’s between Amherst and Brown for ED but I’m not sure about my chances to be honest. Many of my achievements do require some kind of local context with an understanding of my country so if you require further clarification, I will gladly provide it :)

High reach: Amherst, Brown (between these 2 for ED), Williams, Columbia
Reach: Cornell CAS, Wesleyan
Match: UMich LSA, NYU CAS
Safety: Emerson College, Kenyon College

I chose schools without the Core, and I am definitely wholeheartedly in love with the Open Curriculum. I kind of differ from the Asian stereotype in that I am intensely adverse towards anything with numbers, and I love language. I’m intending to do an English major, and double-major in either Philo or Linguistics. I want to grad school after and do my MA in Creative Writing, cuz I’ve wanted to be a published writer since the age of 7.

Here are my stats:

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2220 Superscore (800 CR, 710 M, 710 W)
[] SAT II: Lit 730, Math I 650 (Retaking in Oct, hoping for low 700s for Math and 750+ for Lit)
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): School doesn’t calculate GPA sigh.
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank, but consistently honour roll material.
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): None
[] Senior Year Course Load: Basically full A Level course load, with 2 extra Independent Studies. H2 Lit, H2 Theatre Studies, H2 English Language and Linguistics, H2 KI (something like TOK for IB but way more complex) (J1 End-of-Years: A A B E, J2 Terms: A A B C), 2 Extended Essays (for KI and Drama, both around 2.5-3k words)
[ * If it helps, I’m the only person in my country taking this particular subject combination, because it’s only offered in my school, and I’m the only person in my school with all these subjects]

[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): ELL Scholar, Paper Planes 2010 Upper Secondary Champion and Joint Overall Champion, Top in English in Sec 4, Commonwealth Essay Competition 2012: Silver Award (went for it this year, waiting for results), Judge for Paper Planes Creative Writing Competition 2012 and 2013, Went for Golden Point Award 2011 and 2013 (waiting for results of 2013’s GPA), Creative Arts Programme 2012 (not sure where to put this…)
[/li]

[* Golden Point is Singapore’s premier national writing competition, with established amateur writers all over the country regardless of age participating

 • Being an ELL scholar means I get free education in Singapore even though I’m local, and it’s a government scholarship.
 • Creative Arts Programme is an annual camp for young writers organized by the ministry and the Gifted Education Branch.]

Thank you so much for chancing me!

Have a great day!

Not a chance go back to sitting at home reading textbooks all day you recluse.

Your chances look good, but international applicants usually face tougher odds than domestic applicants. To be accepted, you will also need to be among your country’s best applicants to Brown or Amherst. How do you compare to Singapore’s top students?

You should be fine in either case. If ED doesn’t work for you, you will most likely be deferred to RD rather than rejected and during RD your broad selection of schools should ensure that you will get accepted to several of your choices.

Bump! Please help chance me!

If you don’t like the Core, why are you applying to Columbia?

Yes, you don’t seem to be aware that Columbia is famous for the core. Otherwise, good choices.

Go to the chances forum to play that game. No one can give realchances, especially for internationals. And it looks like you already chanced yourself.

I don’t do chances, but after many years of being on CC, I can say that the world of college acceptance is very different for international students. Every April there are international students who get denied at every school they applied to. At least you don’t need financial aid, so that won’t hurt you.

The bottom line is that I don’t think you can view Kenyon as a safety. I don’t know enough about Emerson’s admissions to judge what your chances are there. And I think UMich and NYU are reaches. If you are really determined to study in the US, apply to more schools and look for colleges that have a very high acceptance rate, especially ones that want to expand their international student body.

BTW, your SAT Lit score of 730 is excellent. Impressive, even. I wouldn’t waste time retaking that. You’d be much better off taking a third SAT II exam and trying to score 700+ in that.

And I hate to burst your bubble even more, but writing an essay about your favorite color is not unique at all.

^^agree about not retaking that Lit SAT, I was surprised to hear you say that and think it is a waster of time
