Chance Me For BU, Syracuse, And A Few Other Schools ( Will Chance Back)

About me: Currently a high school junior in a very reputable Jesuit school on the East Coast.

Hopeful major: Print/Online Journalism ( with an English degree as well)

GPA ( unweighted): 3.5

SAT: Taking it in May/June

I had no honors courses freshman year, however I achieved honoroll every marking period.

English 1, Algebra 1, Latin 1, World Civilization, Christian Ethics 1, Physics

Sophomore year: Grades continued to improve, took one honors course.

English 2 Honors, Chemistry, Geometry, Latin 2, German 1, Christian Ethics 2

Junior year: I have had B+/A average thus far while taking much tougher courses.

AP English Language, Algebra 2 Trignometry Honors, Biology Honors, German 2, US History 1, Christian Ethics 3

Though I havent picked my classes for senior year, this is what I have in mind: AP English Literature, AP Statistics, German 3 Honors, Calculus Honors ( that or Precalculus), US 2, Christian Ethics 4

Co-curriculars: Member of Newspaper, Avid school sports fan ( attend every sporting event around the school), member of Campus Ministry, A Tutor at my highschool's summer program for rising 8th graders

Outside of school: Lector at church, baseball coach, helping around the community

My biggest achievement ( what I feel separates me from most kids my age): I am an NFL Featured Columnist for BleacherReport.com. Became young person in the site's history to hit one million reads, have been featured on CBS Sports, Fox Sports, National Football Post, and others. ( Two workers in B/R plan to write recommendations for me).

My Schools:

Syracuse University
Boston University
Fordham University
Emerson College
Loyola Maryland
St. Joe's Philly
Fairfield University

Note: Both BU and Syracuse have invited me to their summer program this year.

In my opinion, I believe I can get all to these schools. However, it will be good to hear from a different voice. My ability to handle tough courses in a tough school, participate in things outside the class room, and writing for a website that continues to grow in the media world. I'm continuing to work hard and get my GPA up a bit. Also taking SAT classes so I can do solid work on the upcoming tests.

My belief is in the event I dont attend my top 2-4 choices, I can go to a Jesuit school since I know what they expect of me and plus I am likely to get good financial help from them.

Feel free to suggest me other good jesuit schools in the northeast, along with sending me a topic thread if you want me to chance you back. Thanks for your time!

Assuming that your SATs go fairly well, I think you’d get in to all. Are you thinking Newhouse at Syracuse?

Have you ever looked at George Washington School of Media and Public Affairs? Def.not Jesuit, but a good journalism program with very interesting opportunities for experiences and internships.

Thanks for replying! Yes, I would attend the Newhouse program if I got in. I visited the campus this past summer and it was beautiful…

Regarding GW, I’ll have to look into it… The program doesnt have to be a Jesuit school, any program in general to be honest.

Bump. Anyone else have any comments/concerns?

Bump… All comments are appreciated.

Note: These are in order based on how much I want to go there.

You have an excellent hook with the whole NFL columnist thing, that should really put you ahead of your fellow applicants. Try to bump your GPA to a 3.6 by the end of this year (if you can).

Syracuse University - high match
Boston University - high match
Fordham University - match
Emerson College - match
Loyola Maryland - low match
St. Joe’s Philly - no idea
Fairfield University - match

Best of luck.

Syracuse University - high match (newhouse is competitive, from what I know they accept only a few hundred a year, and transfering in is extremly tough)
Boston University - match
Fordham University - match
Emerson College - match
Loyola Maryland - don’t know
St. Joe’s Philly - don’t know
Fairfield University - don’t know

When you say you were invited to their summer programs I assume you mean you got a letter or email explaining it to you and such. If thats the case it’s not that big of a deal :/. That being said, definitly apply to them if you can go.

Thanks guys for the input! From ozzyo’s point, yeah they are just letters as you mentioned. However, the fact that they sent me them shows that they know I’m interested in the universities…

Anyone, feel free to hit me up with more comments

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Update: I am probably going to either BU’s summer program or Emersons… Comments appreciated.

Don’t bother. The majority of summer programs run at any college are run by private companies that simply rent the school campus and are allowed to attach the name. The fact that you received a letter from them to attend the summer program means nothing and going to it won’t help you in your admissions.

improve your GPA, do well on your SAT’s and your in to all of those schools mentioned. Your experience as a columnist will do great in showing your interest in the journalism major, great hook for your application. overall looking good. please chance back! :D

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1086809-what-chances-do-i-have.html</a></p>

Thanks for the feedback guys… I do disagree about the summer programs though, as I feel they can be a benefit because not only do you get to see what the campus is like by dorming there for a few weeks but it also shows the university how interested and dedicated you are… If anyone else has thoughts, its appreciated.

While I agree with the first part of your statement about getting familiar with the campus, the latter is not true. It does not show interest nor does it show dedication in the school. The college (most colleges, that is) do not even see who was at the program until you apply and write it in your college app. Your summer is much better used getting a really good extra-curriciular in the field of your major.

Thanks for the feedback! Anyone else have any thoughts/chance me!
