Bump

I think 33 is 700?
You have a good chance for SE, and a better one for Business, based off EC’s and SAT, but your GPA is pretty low for SLO. You might get in, or might not, so apply to other schools (lower UC’s, CPP, SDSU, etc…)

@Gumbymom do you have any insight. Because If Cal Poly doesn’t consider alternate majors wouldn’t declaring a software engineering major be risky because it could mean outright rejection. I am completely in love with cal poly so I’d rather go here for business than another school for engineering. How risky would it be to apply as a business major and attempt to switch into a SE major after my first quarter, even if I don’t get in I will still be fine with a business major but I have backups for computer science such as CPP and UCSC

@SREE33 according to @eyemgh a 33 was equivalent to a 750 in CR on the old SAT and i know the new SAT EBRW is easier than the old SAT CR so a 750 on the old SAT would be equal to I’m assuming at the very least a 750 and perhaps higher.

I can’t comment on the new SAT. I haven’t seen new concordance charts.

As for choosing business with the hopes of switching to SE, don’t do it. First, CP makes this VERY difficult, If you wouldn’t have gotten into the destination major in the first place, you probably won’t be able to switch. Calculating where you would have fallen had you directly applied, is part of the change of major process. Worse though, SE and CS are so oversubscribed that they aren’t allowing major changes into those two, even from electrical engineering.

Choose Business if you want to do business. Otherwise, choose SE and have safety options.

Good luck!

Thank you I think I will choose business and have safety options in computer science such as Cal Poly Pomona and UCSC.

@eyemgh would you say that I am a very likely admit for Business and a likely admit for engineering(I’ve seen 4700+ MCA competetive for engineering), or is SE too competitive for it to be a likely admit.

My niece is a current SLO student (not in College of Engineering) but knows several Engineering students. According to her only Current Engineering students are able to switch into CS and SE starting this Fall so anyone outside the college is out of luck. If you are happy with pursuing Business, then apply for Business

I presume that as a business student, you could always take some computer science courses as electives.

I don’t make it a habit of chancing students. Based on the over enrollment from last year, everything is going to be more competitive than in years past.

I think you really need to do some deep soul searching. No school is the be all end all. It’s far more about what you do than it is about where you go. Business and CS/SE are VERY different from one and other. Decide on that first, then choose your schools. You are making a life altering decision. Don’t get sucked into the 'it" school if it means you’ll forever be doing something you don’t want to do.

@eyemgh If I could I would I know that CS/SE and business are very different but I am interested in mathematics and these are two majors that stood out to me as I was doing research. I worked as a bookkeeper and we had to use and develop software to make finding different accounts here so I developed an interest in software engineering as well as business, but it’s tough knowing that I may have to be locked into a major. I think that I will pick business as a major for cal poly SLO and be open to other schools for computer science.

If you’re into math, you might look into actuarial science.

I have had a student at Poly in both majors SE and Business. You might want to look into the Information Technology concentration under the Orfalea school of business which does cover the programming aspect of business–data bases and systems development. Pick a major that is a fit and apply — Good Luck!
