@Anish14 @"aunt bea" : Thanks, I’ll keep that all of that in mind. Since it is that expensive, do any of you know about any scholarships available for the UC schools? Only one I’ve seen for Berkeley gets you $2k max…
Even if there were, your ACT, GPA and stats are not going to stand out at UCB, it is a highly desirable school on the international stage with many more applicants than places for even the full paying applicants.
@UCalBound there aren’t many scholarships as far as I’ve read. I saw there isn’t merit scholarships, and the only other “big” Berkely one is Drake. Look more into the aid and scholarships available, but my guess is there aren’t many. Some people go to Cali with the idea of getting residency after a year, but this doesn’t work out. What state do you live in?
Isn’t Drake only for mechanical engineering though? And Florida, so not even close to Cali lol but I’m planning on editing a soccer video with my plays from past seasons, and maybe (if they like me) that can get me a scholarship… I hope
@UCalBound, the reason you can’t find any scholarships for the UC’s is that the few scholarships that are available are funded by the state of California for taxpaying residents. These are the Calgrants and the Blue and Gold plan but again these are for the children of taxpaying residents. You won’t be able to find $55K per year to fund your studies here in California; our state just doesn’t have the money to fund our students and everyone else’s students.
As for gaining residency, the UC’s are savvy about OOS students who try to circumvent the system. So, their documentation states that: Any student whose initial intent is to arrive to California for educational purposes will be charged full fees all 4 years.
The UCs may be too expensive but USC may be affordable with financial aid.
Your ECs are pretty good and ACT is great, but I worry about your GPA, it’s a tad bit on the lower side, as far as I know top schools mostly admit students with a GPA of above 3.75 but your ECs and ACT score cover that part.
So:
UCB: reach
UCLA: low reach
USC: low reach
If you’ve amazing personal statements so you might be a good contender IMO, best of luck
@Digitallyshrewd Yeah my GPA is undoubtedly my weakest part IMO, especially for OOS applicants… Thanks, same to you!
The Cali schools are NOT 26K out of state… tuition itself may be, but if you do a price calculator, you’ll see its about 55K, so unless you get financial aid, it may be problematic, but you’re a match for USC and UCLA, UCB being a reach.
@allison1225 Yeah I found out through the other users that let me know about it… I’m trying as hard as possible to get FA but as long as I have good chances I’ll be happy. Thanks!
I think that all are high mathes except Berkeley which is a low reach. Best of luck!
OP I don’t think it’s possible for FA at the UC’s unfortunately so you might want to reconsider no matter how hard you try you need other plans.
USC : high match
UCLA: high match
UCB: low reach
Chance back?

Depending on your major, the debt from Berkeley could be paid off pretty quick…
USC 70%
UCLA 70%
Berkeley 50%
Good luck man, i’m also a club/ varsity soccer player!
@0br0123: Explain to me, how a family with an income of $60K/year would be able to handle paying for 4 years at UCB which would total $220K??? and pay it off fairly quickly???
@gumbymom
- Scholarships
2)Loans
- If he goes to Haas or does comp science, he could easily get a job the pays 90k+ back in Florida and he could stay with his parents for a year or 2 will paying off debt
He’d need to be quite lucky but this situation is definitely realistic
@DefineGravity Applied to several schools just in case, still going to try to go for FA
@palmtree Thanks, I’ll chance back asap!
@0br0123 Awesome to see another club/varsity soccer player! I’ll do anything to pay it back hopefully Doing as many scholarships possible
@UCalBound. You as a student can only borrow a total of $27K so the rest would depend upon your parents, scholarships and what little FA that may be offered from the UC’s. It is not worth taking on such a huge amount of debt and your family may not even qualify. Good luck but be realistic.
@Gumbymom If it’s something my parents can’t afford, then I will definitely not make them go through the trouble of paying for it. Hoping USC comes through with the FA they offer though.
I believe your best chance for good FA would be USC. Good Luck and I hope everything works out.
