Chance me for college with good business/ accounting program

If he really loves higher math, he might prefer a field like actuarial science or operations research to accounting, which is challenging in its own way but not so much in terms of the level of mathematical theory required. It could be good to choose a school with these possibilities in mind, so that he has some math-ier options other than just a separate math/stats minor or double-major.

This article has a lot of good info about actuarial programs: The 10 Best Actuarial Science Colleges in the US - collegegazette.com
Of that list, UNL jumps out at me for several reasons:

  • Great student quality of life - Lincoln is a great small city for students, and it’s a fun school for sports fandom
  • Nebraska is a hub of the insurance industry, with lots of internship opportunities, etc. (Lincoln has dubbed itself the Silicon Prairie)
  • UNL has several highly-selective cohort honors programs that would put your son in a group of similarly high-achieving peers, many of whom come from out of state. (Applicants can apply to both of these programs, but must choose one or the other if accepted to both.)
    • If he would like some computer science along with his math and business, the Raikes School offers an interdisciplinary core curriculum that spans business, CS, data science, and design; beyond that core, students can choose any related major that the university offers, including accounting, actuarial science, math, statistics, data science, mathematical finance, and more.
    • If he prefers a more traditional business curriculum, the Business Honors Academy offers a similarly high-stats cohort. Students can choose any business major within this program.

There are other great suggestions on that list too - UW-Madison, UMich, U of Iowa, UT-Austin
and of course there’s UPenn Wharton, which is top-of-the-heap for business but doesn’t compare with the others football-wise!

Looking at schools with strong undergrad programs in operations research yields a slightly different list, although UMich and UT-Austin are tops in this also, along with elite STEM schools like MIT-Sloan, CMU-Tepper and Georgia Tech. Rice has a new undergrad major in this field as well (better football than MIT but student fandom is still fairly anemic, although the Marching Owl Band - which doesn’t really march and accepts almost any instrument - is, shall we say, a hoot  )

He should have lots of great options!!
