Essay: I am currently writing my essay about a personal issue in my life that I don't feel like discussing. I'm pouring my heart and soul into this essay and am up late every week working on it. It will hopefully be amazing.

Location: Georgia
Ethnic Background: Panamanian (Although I identify with being black because my Grandmother, although being Latino, is very black, as is my entire father's side of the family).

If your grandmother is Latino, she isn’t black. Eminem is the blackest kid on the block but he’d still have to put Caucasian on his college app.

I know. But I am asked to pick a race along with my ethnicity… my ethnicity is hispanic… if I’m dark-skinned, doesn’t that make me black…?

Oh and bump please!

No, you are hispanic. You need to be a minimum 1/8 actual african [american] to be considered black. Indians have dark skin, doesn’t make them black.

As for your chances, incredibly low. GPA is extremely low for Columbia and Cornell, and your SATs are on the lower end for those schools as well. Maybe a 5% chance at those two. NYU I think you’ll get into. GPA isn’t awful for NYU, and SAT and ECs are above average for it.

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1166769-sats-so-chance-me.html

Okay, balling, so when I’m asked what race I am, what do I put? White…?

Race is not ethnicity. I have to pick an ethnicity and I have to pick a race… so…? It’s just logical for me to pick black and white if I am technically both black and white.

Bump please!! And thank you. Send me a link to your chance thread and I’ll chance you.

Oh, and I got my ACT score: 34

No. You put that your Panamanian.

you have excellent stats like every other person on cc. the only thing you can do now is focus on your essay which shows the administration what makes you more unique than anyone else. i think the stellar resume you have so far is like a layer of icing that showcases your intelligence. what you have to do is to allow them to get the real you now and once you know what you are passionately writing about then you’ll be a winner and get accepted to at least many of these fine schools listed about. best of luck!

Thanks so much!

I’d like a few more opinions, and tips on how I can improve my chances. I’m really trying hard…

I think your SAT is quite good as if your ACT; those will help you in the admissions process. I would suggest you bust your ass to improve your GPA as well as your SAT II Physics (if you want or have time). I’d say Columbia is a reach and ED will help slightly. Cornell is a lower reach but still reach; maybe do ED there, it may help more…
NYU you’re probably in.

Thanks Moonman. Is it possible to improve my GPA at all if my senior year is going to be starting this year?? I’m really disappointed because of my low GPA… Is there anything else that I can do to improve my chances? I was going to take that SAT for my third and final time to go for a 2300+, but would my time be better spent on subject tests? Would getting a job affect my admissions at all (I’m getting a job soon to pay for expenses at home)?

Oh and I’d love a few more chances! Thank you! I’ll chance you guys back.
