Chance me for DC IR schools [Neat and Organized]

I'm in my senior year and would like to know how you think these schools will react to my lower GPA and less than rigorous coursework. I'd like you guys to classify the schools as reach, match, or safety, or things like low reach, high match, etc.

I plan to major in something something international (whatever the school I decide to go to calls it) and focus on the political side of it. ex. conflict resolution.

I'd also appreciate your opinion on how my one foreign language credit will be viewed by these schools since some of them recommend up to four. In my senior year, I chose poli sci for college credit over french II. My school only offers two years of french and spanish and since I'm a native speaker of spanish, I could only take french. Also, if you have the information, I'd like some thoughts on these school's debate programs.

Schools
-George Washington
-American
-Georgetown
-George Mason
-Johns Hopkins
-I would also appreciate any other programs you think it'd be good for me too look at. I know there are good programs in other places, but I think the opportunities in DC might outweigh that. If you have any thoughts on that, please share.

Background
-First Generation male Mexican-American
-Small public school in Missouri

Academics
-3.47 UW GPA - Depending on when I apply, this will be higher, but since it's harder to factor that in, don't worry about it.
-No AP or IB courses because my school doesn't offer them. I didn't take any honors courses until my senior year.
-I'm taking two college credit courses this year and plan to have As in both. I think that will help me out.
-Not sure about my class rank but I think I'm about top 25%
-ACT - 29 Composite (32 Reading, 32 English, 27 Science, 24 Math) Planning on taking again
-Completed the A+ Program. We tutor 50 hours, keep a 2.5 GPA and 95% attendance

Extra-Curriculars
-National Forensics League (Speech and Debate) 3 yrs. Vice-President for 1 yr, President for 2 yrs. Increased membership and team competitive success more than it had been in years while having a successful career as well. All-time point leader in school history.

-DECA (An association of marketing students) 2 yrs. Reporter for 1 yr, President for 1 yr. 1st place in two District Events, 2nd at State, achieved proficiency at Internationals. There is a lot of charity and community work done in this organization as well.

-Band 3 yrs. Marching band section leader 2 yrs.

-Academic Team 3 yrs. JV captain one yr, Varsity captain 2 yrs. All-Conference JV 1 yr.

-Hi-Step (we mentor 3rd graders on bullies, decision making, goals, etc on a weekly basis for 5 weeks) 3 yrs. Group leader for 2 yrs.

-Theatre 3 yrs. Two acting roles and three positions as stage manager.

There are quite a few more, but these are the most important to me.

Employment
-Summer job at local park concession stand. 15 hrs a week
-Sonic Drive-In cook for over a year. 10 hrs a week
-Summer job in an auto detail shop. 24 hrs a week

Recommendations
-I haven't thought much about these until I found out that they might help. I think I could get them from my debate coach, band director, and DECA advisor. I have spent significant time with all of them and I think they would be good. Thoughts?

Thanks for the help!

Wow, that basically sounds like where I am applying and my situation. I think American will be easy to get into but i’m not sure about others.
I’m also in Debate and DECA, I think your debate coach would know a lot about you. Especially since most debate kids spend a good two weekends a month at tournaments. If you do FX or CX it really shows dedication to International things.

Thanks. Yeah, I feel American and GM are more of good matches for me, so maybe they’re somewhere the same for you. And I think I’ll ask them for those things here pretty soon.

bump bump bmp

George Mason is located in Fairfax,VA and John Hopkins is located in Maryland not DC.

-George Washington
-American
-Georgetown
-George Mason
-Johns Hopkins

I’d say you’ll probably get into American and George Mason but denied at the other 3 schools you’ve listed. George Mason will be you’re best bang for the buck though.

Thanks Hulk. I know they aren’t IN DC, but at least closer than where I am.

Johns Hopkins is definitely a reach.

Because you’re a 1st Gen. and Mex-Am, I think you have a shot at GW.

Did you take the SAT or just the ACT?

Hulk, why do you think I’ll get denied? I don’t mean this in an insulting way, I’d just like to know what about my stats aren’t at that level.

Thanks for your input MissPickickian.

buzzard - I think GW seems the most appealing to me right now, so I hope I at least have a shot. Thanks. I haven’t taken the SAT though. I need to find out whether or not these schools require it, or if my ACT is enough. I’ve heard that the ACT is enough for most places. What do you think?

They accept either the ACT or the SAT so you should be ok.

I was just wondering.

good luck.

GW is a good school, but for it to be worth it they ned to give you a lot of scholarship money. I don’t know your finances, but that is something to keep in mind.

American is probably you best bet, since you’re already likely to get in and don’t look at the lack of APs as much as the other schools.

Thanks alexc. Money is definitely a big concern, especially for my parents.

Maybe also look at UMCP? It’s technically Maryland but it’s basically DC. Not sure about the IR but it has the location.

I’ll look into it jkaufman. Thanks!

In response to your question, the rest of the schools you desire are out of your GPA. Though being of Mexican descent helps out tremendously, I’m certain you won’t be admitted into Gtown nor John Hopkins. I’d say your 50/50 at GWU. Good luck.
