I am wondering if applying Early Decision to Brown would be a waste of my Early Decision or do I have an adequate chance of being accepted? Brown is currently my first-choice, but I do not know if it is too far of a reach. Feedback from more experience CCers?

Question: How much pull does a recommendation from Brown alumni bring? How much pull does being an athlete bring?

If you posted in the What Are My Chances section of the forum, you would get a lot more responses.

It would also help if you could provide your ethnicity and state of residence.

But from what I can tell, your numbers look solid but your ECs seem weak. It’ll come down to how much you can humanize yourself through your essays.

And for your questions, getting supplemental rec letters (those not written by your teachers and guidance counselors) has never had much weight in the admissions process. And being an athlete is really only beneficial if you can get yourself recruited.

Ya, I’m working on getting recruited.
My ec’s may not be “strong,” but they took up a lot of time.
Race:White/Native American
State: FL

Do you have a tribal card (or have you participated with your tribe)? If you do, that’ll help you out a lot. If you can prove your heritage with papers, it’ll probably only take you an hour to get a card. It actually took me less time than that.

unfortunately, I live in a different state than my tribe. I still AM native american, but I will call my nation(tribe) anyways and try to get a card.

I got into Brown with virtually no ECs nor sports, so I wouldn’t worry too much about that. I would not go to great lengths to show the admissions board you are native american beyond saying so in the appropriate box. Getting a card and sending it to them just sounds so desperate. It wouldn’t hurt to have such a card available IF they ask you for verification at some point (but I so strongly doubt they would).

Edit: All of your stats are far better than mine were. Just work hard on those essays! Ask for very (painfully) honest critiques from friends and even people on the internet you don’t know.

Most top schools ask for verification, including Brown.

I’ll attempt to get the card. The people at my Nation(Tribe) are really disorganized, but whatever. If I got a 36 on my ACT, would that significantly raise my chances.

No. I’m sure you could find something better to do with your time.

Ok, sorry. I always feel like Brown gives people the benefit of the doubt, but maybe this is different.
