Chance me for ED Class of 2023 (Northwestern University)

Hi all, really hoping to ED to Northwestern. Based on this post, it would be much appreciated if someone could let me know what my chances of ED Admission look like, thanks so much!

This is how I stack up:

Cumulative GPA that shows up on school transcript: 3.84 (unweighted)
Freshman Year Final GPA: 3.35 unweighted
Sophomore Year Final GPA: 3.95 unweighted
Junior Year Final GPA: 4.05 unweighted, 4.55 with IB weighting
Trend: constant upwards since HS
I attend an International school in Beijing, English is native language even though I’m Chinese, and take the Full IB Diploma Programme with HL in English Literature, Economics, and Film, SL in Math, Chemistry, and French.

SAT: 1540 on first go with 750 in R/W and 790 in Math

Hoping to apply for School of Communication this coming fall.

ECs:

  1. Served as our school’s Interact Club (local service club working with an elderly nursing home) Project Manager (exec position) for two years, had to step down as all exec positions only stick for two years before panel has to switch. Will remain as a general member. Started up various small activities and one long term project with a school for poor teenagers during my time as exec
  2. Been a member of my school’s literature and arts magazine (called “Sententiae”) editorial panel since Freshman year
  3. Currently working as an intern (not employee, in China everyone under 18 can only “intern”) at BeijingKids, one of the largest foreign-language magazines for expats in the city as an editor and writer for both their online and physical issues
  4. HS Varsity Rugby since sophomore year
  5. Member of ESEE - club at our school working with local school kids teaching them English, art, and music every Sunday in the morning.
  6. Gave a TEDx Talk at event hosted at our school covering obscure areas within the topics of nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle (I track macros and consistently make nutrition/fitness a big part of my day to day life)
  7. Co-Founder of “Teach and Promise” - an out of school project established by my friend and I through fundraising, teaching English to 16 impoverished kids from local schools who live in Hutongs (traditional low-budget residential areas in Beijing)
  8. Co-Founded Rainbow Rehabilitation - new HS club founded by two friends and myself working with children with autism from a local rehabilitation center (currently in trial period)
  9. Summer Programs (?) - one at Columbia one at Northwestern - not sure if these really go here

Special Circumstances: Well, this is gonna be better worded on the actual application if I use this section, but basically had a pretty bad year Freshman Year of dumb adolescent drama, slacking off and all the wrong friends. If only we had time machines huh. Got my act together quick coming back after that summer.

FORGOT TO ADD!!
SAT: 1540 with 750 in R/W and 790 in Math

I think that your SAT scores and ECs are great ! But I do not know “Why Northwestern?”. Your answer to this question is important to NU admissions.

Are you willing to share any thoughts about your summer school experiences at Columbia & Northwestern ?

P.S. Seems like your EC activities & interests show that you would be a good match for both the School of Communications as well as SESP (School of Education & Social Policy).

Yeah! Columbia was a business program that ran a two week simulation of large-scale corporation acquisitions. Our team played the role of Amazon Inc. acquiring Netflix as a subsidiary, and I was the Chief Human Resources Officer. The acquisition was successful and our team advanced to the next stage of the camp which was two weeks after in Philadelphia (I was unable to attend as I had to return to China). Northwestern was a Screenwriting Seminar which ran for three weeks and had three main thesis projects for each week, where we essentially focused on small-scale screenplays for Mon-Wed and had the remainder of the week to develop short film and television scep scripts (basically 40-80 page screenplays in four days), and I really did learn a lot as screenwriting was an avenue I had always been interested in but never pursued in depth until then. Ended that one with an A-, A, and A on my three theses, receiving particular praise on my final screenplay (which was a Harry Potter prequel pilot for a television series concept based around the founders of Hogwarts - had a LOT of fun with that one).

If communications/media is your focus, and you want to play competitive rugby, consider Colgate. Obviously NU is exceptional in this regard, but Colgate as a liberal arts school has quietly produced a lot of people working in those fields. Also the rugby team is quite successful and competitive, more so than most smaller schools. Good luck!
