I'm obviously going to Vanderbilt if I get accepted, but do you think I have a shot with my GPA? Thanks!

To be honest probably not, they have denied so many people this year with even higher sats and gpa then you

I’m going to have to disagree with mathmaster on this one. Admissions is a game of chance sometimes.

I noticed that you switched from sports to more academic ECs… and have leadership in them. Why? is there some passion behind that, or is it merely for the college acceptance. You’re definitely involved, and clearly have the intelligence for Vanderbilt if you look at your SAT score.

You’re GPA is probably going to be the killer… Are you getting a 4.0 this semester? Definitely send that in, but if you aren’t getting above a 3.0, you’re chances are pretty slim. Is there a reason for your low GPA? lack of focus, not mature, trying to figure out who you are? Let that come out, and explain that in essays or a letter sent to your admissions officer.

Essays and recs are what will make or break you as an applicant. Do you have someone that’s seen you grow throughout the years? use that. Let your essays unapologetically scream you, and show why you are who you are today: a high gpa, high sat scores, captain of academic teams, rather than the low gpa swimmer/volleyballer (though i have to admit, i’m impressed by 2 sport varsity athletics as a freshman) of your past.

It’s a long shot, but then again, admissions to Vanderbilt is beginning to become a long shot for all sorts of applicants. You might be able to get in, but i can’t really tell you your chances, just things that i think might help you stand out.

Good luck, and don’t be afraid to be yourself!

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Vanderbilt only look at CR + M SAT scores? In that case, your score of 1530/1600 is more impressive than 2210/2400! I’m pretty sure that 1530 is on the higher end of their acceptances.

However, your GPA is low, so like Jmeneses said, definitely show who you are through your essays and why you didn’t do better in school, and try to bring up your GPA this semester so you can send it in. It is a long shot because of that, but I think you definitely have a chance!

Good luck!

on the common app, the additional information section is where you’re supposed to explain any oddities or indiscretions within your application. if i were you, i would definitely use that, and i’d come up with something really creative for your essay, but also making sure it’s still undeniably you. take what makes you unique and turn it into an essay. mine was basically about how i can’t fit myself into an anecdote or just one topic, or 500 words for that matter, so i wrote a bit of a montage of snapshots from my life and explained how each one influenced me. it doesn’t have to be perfect. it just needs to have a voice. good luck!!!

Pros: Nice upward trend, okay ECs
Cons: God-awful GPA, you seem to have given up on some ECs? why would you do that?

If you have a 4.0 this semester, you’ll have an okay chance. If not, well, good luck either way. And as far as essays and recs are concerned, those will only take you so far when your stats are lagging behind (in your case GPA). I would gather from your test scores and your GPA that you were lazy early on in HS and seem to have gotten it together. Talk about maturing in your essay if that’s the case.
