I have participated in the F=ma exam, AMC(Missed AIME by 1.5 -.-), Physics Bowl, Science Olympiad Physics regionals.

A note on my math and physics grades.
I would say that a lot of people in my school have a higher math and physics GPA then I do
but I do an incredible amount of self-studying for contest and Olympiad math on my own. Same thing with physics, I learned everything after I got the grades in my classes. Because I've been interested in the two subject for a very short time I did not have a chance to post good scores in competitions or anything like that. How could I show colleges I'm on a much higher level than my grades suggest? Also how much do colleges care about Technical drawing art/music and health?

Super duper uber reach
MIT

Other schools
U Chicago
U Mich
Johns Hopkins
NYU
Carnegie Mellon
What other schools are good for pure/applied math and where are good places to apply early?

Thanks in advance to anybody who helps me. I'll chance back, thanks!

Bump it up.

I’'m familiar with the high school, and I definately think your grades are in a much different context coming from there. I think your scores are good-but get that writing score up! That shouldnt be too hard, though,as writing is simple to improve upon.

You are really focused, and that’s great, colleges will love that.

MIT is a reach, as is Hopkins, but I think the other ones are high matches/matches.

Chance me?

P.S-I’m jealous of how good you are in math!

maybe ill see you at HCCiSM!

Haha maybe you will!
Thanks Hannah. I chanced back.

Also wanted to note.

My school has a stupid policy which only allows people with my grades to take 2 AP’s. I took one in Sophomore year because I couldn’t take history and I took Calc this year because I got rejected from AP Comp-Sci even though I had a 4.0 CS GPA.

I also refuse to take AP’s I don’t like just to look good for college.

Bump. Is Duke ED a good idea?

Lets try another bump.

Just get your SAT score up, and you’ll be fine. I personally know people who attend (and have attended) Stuyvesant, a 91 UW GPA is pretty impressive. Just get you’re writing score up a 100 points, and your only challenge will be MIT. UChicago and JHU won’t be guarantees, but you’ll have a very strong shot.

You have most of the EC’s and stuff and your stats for math and reading are good just work on that writing score. Even though writing is not the most important of the three, it will still look bad on you if it’s around there if you can bump that up to at least a 700. Also work on your GPA because that is bringing you down. You have a decent chance at getting in to all of most of these schools.

Chance back http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1118342-what-my-chances-getting-into-ivies-stanford-etc.html</a></p>

Thanks for the input!
I chanced back by the way.

One thing I’m afraid of is that I picked out a field that I won’t stand out in very well compared to other kids in my school. There are a ton of people who have good math contest showings and stuff and it’s very hard for me to get a leadership position in a math team that has ~80 members. I’m also afraid I started contest math a little bit too late, but I still love it!

I think the only school on that list that will present a serious reach is MIT. Your critical reading score should be significantly higher, but that shouldn’t be too hard to improve upon (and even if you don’t improve it, you may still have a shot).

Thanks Strangebro!

Goddamn it, why is MIT so hard to get into.

MIT’s hard because everybody wants to get in!
I’d consider it your only reach, along with possibly Carnegie Mellon and JHU. You should look into Chicago, they have a great math program (my friend’s turning down Stanford for it).

Overall, your app is solid. I would not consider your scores (mostly AMC) to be on the level of a top tier program (eg MIT). Improving those and qualifying for AIME (maybe even USAMO) will help your app a lot. The point about your grades being lower (well, it is Stuy…) will help you mostly if your scores are there - get them there!

chance meh! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1120270-preemptive-chance.html</a></p>

Thanks! The problem is I can’t submit senior year math contest scores from AMC/AIME next year, (which is a shame because I think I have a decent shot at USAMO next year) but I need to get my GPA and SATs up.

I’m going to chance back.

True - maybe work towards the IPho/F=ma competitions.

Still too late lol. I missed Physics semis by ~1.5 this year. If I started contests in middle school like most people I know I probably would have had a better shot.

My only hope is PUMAC and ARML.

You are great at math/physics, but not very well rounded in terms of athletics and other non-academic ECs

Try to improve the SAT and GPA

Mit- reach

Nyu, carnegie mellon- low reach

U Chicago, JHU- high match/match

U Mich- in

hey buddy,

try and improve that SAT1 a little maybe? SAT2 is great. EC’s are good and make sure you write a stellar essay.

here are your chances:

MIT - Reach

U Chicago - Low Reach/Match
U Mich - Match
Johns Hopkins - Match
NYU - Match + In
Carnegie Mellon - Low Reach/Match

Thanks guys. My non-academic EC’s are
Camp CIT for two summers
Piano for 8 years
A lot of involvement in synagogue (Setting up and leading services etc…)

Do you guys think it’ll work in my favor to get my instructor from one of my Saturday programs (He was an IMO silver medalist and graduated Harvard Summa cum laude and is a Putnam fellow) to write a rec for me?
