Essays:
For common app essay i wrote about how i balance my live in a country where there is constant war and how no one in family wants me to go to college.

For harvard’s supplemental essay i wrote about cecilia payne- a british woman who was not allowed to study astrophysics inside her country and harvard gave her the opportunity to do so- and how i relate to her and how i take inspiration from her.

And btw very few apply to us colleges from Afghanistan- around 10 people annually- so there is less competition

Actually, there is more competition; you are still competing with all other international applicants, and since Harvard seems to have a soft capon the percentage of international students (roughly 12%), you should assume that the acceptance rate for the international group is roughly half compared to the acceptance rate for US applicants.

Also note that Harvard has a grand total of 0 undergrads from Afghanistan, so clearly they are not accepting applicants justto say they have someone from that country.

Good luck.

I actually did my research and the international acceptance rate for harvard is roughly the same as the domestic one but thank you anyway

Please enlighten us with the source of your research. Inquiring minds want to know.

At the risk of trying to answer your original question…

The most obvious issue is your SAT score. This is somewhat offset by very good SAT subject tests. However, 1420 will not help you. Also, other than your SAT score, your stats are excellent, but probably relatively typical for international applicants to Harvard. International students at the top schools (obviously including Harvard) are often of the “top student in their country” caliber.

As such I would be surprised if your chances are much different from the overall acceptance rate for international students to Harvard. Your changes might be marginally higher than the overall acceptance rate, but you certainly need to spend time focusing on other schools to apply to.

I have always heard that the acceptance rate was lower for international students. However, just now while I was able to find how many international students were accepted, I was not able to find any stats on how many international students applied to Harvard for any one particular year.

From what you’ve shared, you seem an interesting, possibly compelling applicant. If you apply broadly you I expect you’ll be offered a fantastic education at a very low cost. Good luck!
