Chance me for Harvard, please.

I'm currently a Sophomore in High School.

GPA: 3.85 (uw) 4.85 (weighted)
These should be much higher by the end of this year, when they will be recalculated.

Rank: 1/800+
AP's Taken so far: AP World, AP Spanish Lang, AP Euro, AP Human Geo, AP Psych.

I've taken 5 classes at a community college, which counts as college credit. I plan on taking more of these.

EC's: Volunteer Service at Nursing Home, will travel to Caribbean for Humanitary help, Amnesty International, Social Studies Honor Society, Spanish Club, FBLA, Interact Club, First Priority, Silver Knight Club, SAAD Club.

Next year will also join Model UN, National English Honor Society , Science Honor Society and Math Club

Classes for next year (Junior Year):
AP Computer Science A, AP Art History, AP Spanish Literature, AP Environmental Science, AP English Language, AP American History, Pre-Calc Honors, and classes at community college.

Oh, I took the Spanish SAT II and got 800. Will soon be taking Math and Bio.

Also, during 9th grade and 10th (this year), I've taken everything Honors or AP.

The classes I take at my community college are after school throghout the year, so my schedule is full most of the time. I just hope colleges can see that because it is really a lot of work o:

This may help me... or not, but I'd like to throw it out there. I'm the first person in my family to go college, and my mom and I moved here from Cuba just 4 years ago. I came here without knowing things such as the language , and I'm truly proud of myself and the things I've accomplished (: I just want to say to anyone that, anything that you want to do in life, you can do it (:

Please lemme know what I should work on and I really appreciate your comments!! (: Thanks for your time!

oh, and I have my Citizenship (:

Too early although if you maintain the number 1 spot in that class of 800+ students, I would say you are clearly moving in the right direction.

Question: Are you Cuban? Having minority status is a big plus for top schools. A minority valedictorian is certainly rare.

Honestly it sounds like you will have a really good shot at Harvard. Cuban+(possible)valedictorian (or at least top 1%) + first generation college student are very appealing for top schools.

Thanks for the reply Cortana431! I am Cuban, and I really hope that helps me o: As I mentioned, I got here just four years ago, so I really hopes that serves me well. As you said, it is rare to find minority students in top of the class, so I also hope the University can see that. Thanks for your response (:

I might advise you deepen your involvement with the (not small) number of clubs you’ve got rather than adding a bunch more. Quality matters just as much as quantity, if not more so.

1st gen URM with good stats, ECs, etc. = really good chance

Thanks to everyone! I do have to work on my ECs. Thanks for your comments

OP… Read this post very carefully. Nobody who posts on this threat has a clue whether you will get into Harvard or not. This includes me. I have no clue whether you would get in if you applied, so please, just do the best you can do in school and with everything else. If you get in, good for you. If you don’t, you will go to an institution of similar caliber. So many stories of people like you getting rejected, so many stories of “non-extraordinary” kids getting accepted. College Confidential will not increase your chances in any way

I’m aware, but I guess it always helps to see what other people think (:

I’m just saying, most of these posters are saying that you have “great” chances. I dont necessarily disagree, but don’t let this make you expect to get in, because statistically, it’s still very unlikely

buuuuuuump

Without an ACT/SAT score, I wouldn’t hazard a guess. And if you haven’t taken either test yet, it’s too early to ask strangers to chance you.

You’re doing too much kid. Enjoy high school, lighten up. If you’re a good student, and prove it on your SAT and ACT, they’ll accept you.

Almost everything sounds like it’s going very well for you, but try to actually cut down on the number of clubs. If Harvard or any Ivy for that matter see that you have too many club commitments and that your focus isn’t on a few things that you have a passion for, the sheer number of your extracurriculars is not going to be something that is going to impress them. Quality over quantity! Also, don’t try to be so consumed with school that you are wasting your 4 years of high school as a robot. Enjoy your time! It passes quicker than you know and make the most out of high school in a way that can change your life.
