Chance me for Huntsman/Wharton =)

I'm an international student applying for the class of 2014. I'm from Macedonia and I go to an Economics and Law Secondary School. I am applying for Huntsman/Wharton. I know my SAT stats aren't stellar but I haven't been preparing that long for the SAT and I'm not such a good test taker so I'm just glad its not under 2000. As for the Subject tests, the german test and math were the only two I could take since my school doesn't offer any science classes.

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT Verbal: 670
[] SAT Math: 670
[] SAT Writing: 660
[] SAT Total: 2000
[] SAT II: German w/listening: 580 Math I:640(I'm retaking this one in January and also taking Math II)
[] TOEFL IBt: 112
[li] AP/IB taken/scores: School doesn't offer anything of the sort. I go to a vocational/technical school, its basically a school that allows you to 'specialize'(major) in Economics or Law. I'm an economics major, so my classes for the past four years have been: Banking, Finance, Fundamentals of Business, Fundamentals of Law, Commerce, Commerce Law, Mathematics, Economics Math, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, English and lit, German, Organization, Management, Marketing, Practical work, Accounting, Macedonian and lit, Art, Music, Economics Geography, Statistics etc.[/li][ *] GPA: 5 (on scale to 5)
[ *] Rank or % estimate: school doesn't rank but I would be in the top 10%. It wouldn't be possible to rank more specific because my school is brutal when it comes to grading. Practically half the class is with all As and it's not the professors being generous, trust me.

Also: Its ranked #8 of the schools in the country, but its #1 of the vocational/technical high schools.

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Teachers and everyone tell me they are great, I hope the adcoms will feel the same way. I'm really pleased with my common app essay, and I think the 217 turned out good. I'm currently writing the Why Penn and Huntsman essay (and I have a great topic for the Huntsman one).
[] Teacher Recs: Great -Both know me really well. One of them has previously written a rec for me for something else and it was amazing, so I'm confident that at least one of these will be great.
[] Counselor Rec: Great rec, she knows me really well.
[] Hook (if any):
-Underrepresented country.
-I'm not sure about being first generation since my dad has a masters degree but he's got it from a German academy so I suppose I would be the first to go to an American college.
-Showing my interest in Business by starting to study it early?

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Macedonia
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian/Eastern European
[] Gender: Female
[] Legacy Yes/No: I wish
[] Recruited Yes/No: No
[] Important ECs:
- I've done a lot of Foreign Youth Exchanges with people from different countries through the European Voluntary Service under the Youth in Action program by the European Commission
- School youth organization president (I was an active participant in first year, secretary in second, vice-president in third and president in fourth)

70+ views and no replies? anyone? :)

You seem like a strong applicant. SAT I scores are a bit low, but if you can’t retake them in January then there’s nothing you can do.

Go for it, but it’s hard to give any stronger indications than “maybe” for highly selective schools like UPenn.

Actually I won’t be able to retake the SAT I in January cause here there’s only one date in that month and I’m taking the Math II then. February then? lol
Otherwise I’m hoping that having a lot of international experience plus four languages will help me. :)

Haha yeah that’s what I was referring to. February’s too late, unfortunately.
The international angle might boost your application, and wow, congrats on the four languages.

Good luck (:

wow. u seem interesting. it would be great to share a dorm with u if u get in! hope u do.

I’m thinking your 580 in German SAT II really brings you down because part of Huntsman is to be completely fluent in the language (ideally 800). I believe Wharton really requires you to be good in math, and a 640 in Math I really doesn’t give that impression. You’d have to get an 800 on Math II this Jan to show you’re strong in math.

Other than the stats, all your EC’s look quite amazing. Good luck :)

@ akkipenn: I hope Penn admissions think so too  God knows I’m trying harder than ever!

@tristan: Eugh I know I hate that score. I honestly expected my german score to be better than my math one. And now for things to be worse, I cannot take the german test in January so I’m stuck with that score. My winter break starts jan 1st and I’m spending all 20 days of it studying math, hopefully missing two ski trips and two foreign country visits will pay off. :)

yeah you seem like a good applicant and wow ecs:)
good luck

You are a good student, but I’m sorry to say I think your low SAT score as an international serves as a giant detriment to your app.

nelesy dont listen to these ■■■■■■. go for it. i had given up hope of getting in. i had failed my freshman year in ALLL SUBJECTS!!! like 10 U’s (equivalent to lowest AP grade). still here i am- huntsman '14! just write gud essays and give ur best shot!

@funnypunjabi: Thanks for chancing me! Will chance back asap!
@honorscentaur: I know my scores are my biggest weakness, I can only hope that everything else outshines them (and that I get better ones in jan). It was great talking to you btw :)

@akkipenn :Thank you! That means a lot to me! snugs

Hi akkipenn. Merry Christmas and happy holidays. I, like nelesy, would like to go to Upenn. In fact Upenn is my #1 pick. Otherwise i would not have made a cc account just to ask this question, so i hope you will be around and help me out. Regarding the Huntsman’s essay, is it supposed to sound eloquent and flowery like a typical college essay or should it be more about substance and information? For example, here is my original intro, which i think sounds good, but now i think it might be just superfluous junk and i am wondering if i should talk about the economic crisis right from the beginning:

Today, the world can in many ways be seen as one global civilization, a single entity driven together by the force of globalization. Never in history has mankind witnessed an exchange of people, goods, and idea on such a grand scale. The world of today is one of interconnectedness and interdependence. The world of tomorrow will be even more so. Lead by global economic integration, the movement of globalization not only brings the world together economically, but also creates a common forum for major global issues. Little wonder then that international affairs and business should have become so intertwined. The latest global economic crisis and the subsequent recovery efforts is no exception.

I pretty much know all the details of what i am going to talk about, but i just dont know how to start, and the intro is supposed to be the most important part, so i want to capture their attention, but idk wat theyre looking for. any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you could somehow email me a copy of your essay so i get the general format of how you did it, that would be awesome.

nelesy- i think you have a shot (although none of our opinions really matter at the end of the day since were not the admissions office). Dont worry about your german SAT score- i got a 600 in french+listening and Im huntsman '14. You have the ECs, the grades and now all you need are good essays. You need to show that you are passionate about the huntsman program and that it fits you as a person

chenkai37- mine wasnt flowery at all. It was simple (and very last minute) and it was 3/4 of a page. i guess it differs from person to person but i dont think theyre looking for anything flowery- i think theyre just looking for substance while keeping in mind youre 17 :p

So would you suggest that i incorporate my own experiences into the essay, or should it be more like an academic essay that is 3rd person and very objective?

i dont know if your “own experiences” are neccessary, but you do need to try and give an opinion about the subject you are discussing (this is how you show them that you ARE interested in international relations)

@MiddleEastern: I have never been so passionate about anything the way I am about the Huntsman program. It is literally my dream school/program/focus/major/everything! And I’m really trying to make my essays stand out! Thanks for the advice <3

so nelesy, chenkai did u guys make it in the end? I am sure you’ll do great anywhere u go. but just curious :)
