chance me for ivies

SAT I : 2380 (one sitting, fifth try)
SAT II: 730, 750, 800
HS GPA: 3.60 (top prep school. but still, i was a lazy boy)
College GPA: 3.75 (top 25 university), hopefully 3.80 by the time i apply for transfer
Ethnicity: asian american

Extracurriculars: second violinist at college orchestra...that's really about it.

Internships/summer jobs: journalist at state newspaper, marketing intern at a large pharmaceutical firm.

hooks: major in medieval/renaissance studies; i can read/write in six languages, including english, chinese, korean, french, latin, italian

recommendations: possibly one strong, one stellar (best in career)

applying: yale, stanford, penn, columbia, cornell, amherst, dartmouth, swarthmore, georgetown, berkeley, UCLA

negatives: my hs and college gpas are relatively low. also, i will be 24 by the time i transfer. also, i've been rejected by yale, stanford, columbia, penn before, and waitlisted at amherst. my extracurriculars are weak

What school are you at and for what standing are you applying? I get the general impression that schools that previously rejected you are rarely inclined to accept you for transfer. (That was my experience, anyways.)

Your GPA is very solid and your SATs speak for themselves, though five tries is a bit much.

Yale: Doubtful
Stanford: Doubtful
UPenn: Doubtful
Columbia: Doubtful
Cornell: Match/Low Reach
Amherst: Reach
Dartmouth: Reach
Swarthmore: Match/Low Reach
Georgetown: Low Reach
Berkeley: Match/Low Reach
UCLA: Match/Low Reach

Even in light of your record, admissions by their very nature are arbitrary and absurdly competitive, especially transfer admissions. Your stellar rec may just be the ticket in to some of these places, though. You will find little help here besides idle speculation, as you are clearly qualified and your fate rests in the AdComs' hands.

i am going to have to say that you have a good chance at UCLA, georgetown and swarthmore. Other than that, they are all reaches.

Swarthmore is one of the hardest LACs to get into remember. They usually take a good deal less transfer students percentage wise than Cornell, Georgetown, Berkeley, and UCLA. as far as transfers go, it is even less than UPenn.

The extremely high average high school and college GPA, mixed with SAT scores that average at the same level to, or even higher than schools like Columbia, UPenn, or Dartmouth...This isn't including the california schools which too are much lower in scores and grades. it should not be considered one of the "easier" schools to get into on this list.

As a transfer Gtwon, UNC, UVA, Michigan, Emory, Rice, Northwestern, JHU, and WashU are much more transfer friendly, in terms of possibility of acceptance, than the Ivies and top LACs. I would add a couple more of these just in case.

I'd say your best bet would be Georgetown. The Ivies and Stanford are definite reaches... UCLA and Berkeley are also very tough to transfer into if you're not a California resident (they are required to fill their transfer spots first with students from California CCs and universities). Maybe look into Northwestern and Rice? Very excellent schools that accept a fair number of transfers.

If you really want to transfer no matter what, you definitely need to add some more matches/safeties to that list. If you're totally content at your current school, then your list is fine... just don't expect many options come May. Even for the most qualified candidates, transfer admissions to the Ivies are a crapshoot at best.

I agree. Transfer admissions isn;t like college admissions for seniors. You have to play the game and apply to schools that actually will accept transfers. Acceptance rates very incredibly, I heard at Yale and Amherst it was less than 5% last year, while WashU or Gtown can be as high as 30%.
