I live in California.

I can’t provide an admissions probability, but I can speak to the Russian department. I am a first year student here and currently I am in Intro to Russian Literature (which is equivelant to “Russian 5” once you get past the grammar sequence). It’s quite enjoyable and the professors are really great. There are plenty of opportunities to meet 1 on 1 if you need extra help and they all go the extra mile. They are also good about helping to apply for fellowships / scholarships to study abroad and writing letters of recommendation if needed. The class sizes are small too (only 10-12 students per class). I can say I’ve learned more in the past 2 months than I have in the past 2 years in high school probably. All of the IR classes here so far have been fantastic.

Apply and do your best, it will work out in the end. Let me know if you have any other questions regarding the program.

Wow thanks for being so open. I actually would like to major in Biology but I do intend on taking Russian 5.

Thanks for your reply. =]

You have a shot. You are in the ballpark. However, basically everyone applying will have similar stats.

So many people applying to hopkins have the same or better stats than you. Your essay and letters better be good. I personally hate it when people make such a big deal out of being born in other countries and coming to the US when they were babies or toddlers. Those people would never remember (or be impacted by) the transition

I may not remember the transition, as you say, but imagine this:

Your family is living in a place where your parents’ parents have grown up, and perhaps their parents. Your family knows all the ins and outs. You know when it is appropriate to laugh, and when to cry. Then you move. You are in an entirely new world–a new culture. You watch your parents struggle. Perhaps I was not affected by the transition itself, but I watched my parents go through it all. Their mistakes were my mistakes. In Russia they had already made their own set of mistakes and learned from them. Here they have to make those same mistakes again. They came to America with virtually no English. Now tell me, how you can possibly be unaffected by this?
