Chance me for: McComb's School of Business - University of Texas at Austin (External Transfer)

I very recently found out that my Dual Credit grades would factor into my admission decision, and it has utterly destroyed my admission chances. I am extremely upset about this, because I was misinformed and had my entire Freshman year planned on this misinformation. So is the way of the world I suppose.

Anyways, my cumulative GPA will be around a 3.71 with an A, B, B, C in my Dual Credit classes, totaling 14 hours. This is the only downside however, as the rest of my application is extremely strong, so I am somewhat optimistic. I understand that my situation is extremely hard to gauge, however I would love for some opinions.

Currently a University of Texas at Tyler freshman planning to transfer into McComb’s school of business at UT Austin next fall. I will have Calculus 1 and 2 finished, along with Micro/Macroeconomics. I am still finishing Calculus 2 currently, but I have a 97 in there right now and without a doubt will finish with an A+.
Dual Credit GPA: 3.07
UT Tyler GPA: 4.0
Cumulative GPA: 3.71
Hours (by end of 2017 Spring semester): 45
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Resume: President of the Financial Management Association. Single handedly grew the organization to nearly 5 times its original size. This covered most of my resume.
EC: 12 hours a semester of volunteering at a food bank.
Essays: I consider myself a fantastic writer, so a 9/10 is safe to assume. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to write about my Dual Credit grades specifically because I recently found out that they were factored in.
LOR: I have four letters of recommendation from ALL of my professors last semester, excluding the online one. Two of them are EXCELLENT and detailed, since I went out of my way to impress these teachers. The best one is from the head of the Department of Management here on campus. If I do get denied, I plan to appeal and submit two LOR from this semester, which include my Calculus 2 professor, (who is very fond of me) and my history professor. This will total 6 LOR; far more than most other applicants.

I care a lot about Finance and have the highest GPA possible, represented well in my essays. If I get denied, I plan to write the best and most detailed appeal essay ever written. As I stated before, I consider myself a great writer, so this shouldn’t be a huge problem. I plan to write letters to admission (I understand they aren’t supposed to consider this in applications, but it’s worth a shot). The admissions office knows very well who I am, as I have contacted them many times and continue to do so until I am officially denied. They also know that they had been misinforming me on Dual Credit information, which may prove to be beneficial. Anyways, looking for some opinions. Thanks in advance!

You have a pretty low GPA for external transfer for McCombs. Usually to get in,the external GPA cut off is around 3.8+… but it changes every year depending on the competitive pool of GPAs.

@ut2019 I appreciate the honesty with regards to my actual GPA. There is an extremely small chance that I will be accepted if they strictly disregard my History professors and Cal 2 professors LOR’s and solely look for my cumulative GPA. If admissions does this, no matter how good my other requisites are, I will not be accepted.

Please let me know what you think of my argument, but I believe my chance lies in any other scenario. It is obvious that I am a worthy candidate for the school of business, and I have proven myself exponentially this year. I am not exaggerating with my resume, essays, and LOR. Please read my original post again if you disagree. I have done nothing wrong whatsoever and everything I possibly can to gain admission. As long as admissions decided that my Dual Credit grades don’t represent myself as I have this year, I am an extremely good candidate for admission.

With that said, I am not certain admissions will care so much. They would see that I am a qualified candidate by a good margin, but still deny me because it doesn’t necessarily matter because my cumulative is a 3.71. Thank you for the reply.

@UT2019 My mistake my scenario has changed since then. Please reply and let me know what you honestly think!

After submitting my application, I found out that my Dual Credit grades from high school would factor into my admission decision. This was contradictory to what I had been told since high school, and I had planned my entire freshman year on this misinformation. Anyways, my UTT gpa is a 4.0, but my cumulative GPA will be around a 3.71 with an A, B, B, C in my Dual Credit classes, totaling 14 hours. This is the only downside however, as the rest of my application is EXTREMELY strong. See for yourself below.

Calculus 2: A+
Calculus 1: AP Credit
Microeconomics: A+
Macroeconomics: A+

Dual Credit GPA: 3.07 (Two English classes and two Biology classes from high school)
UT Tyler GPA: 4.0
Cumulative GPA: 3.71
Hours (by end of 2017 Spring semester): 45
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Resume: President of the Financial Management Association, one of the two business organizations on campus. We started the organization with 5 members, and when the year ended there were 20, many actively involved. I gave speeches to classes on why to join and educated them on Finance, and led the organization to community service. To be honest, I did nearly everything myself, since the other officers didn’t really care at all. Not trying to brag or sound condescending, but just being honest about how my resume was presented.

LOR: I have 7 letters of recommendation from 6/10 of my professors, and 1 from the tutoring center at the University who begged to write me one. 5 of them are pretty good, of course they wrote well about me but nothing way out of the ordinary. The other 2, which are my Calculus 2 professors and my History professors, were ASTOUNDINGLY good. My History professor said I was “the best student she had ever had in 30 years of teaching”, and my Calculus 2 professor (Went to an Ivy League) put some very similar material in his letter. Both my History and Calculus 2 professors talked about how I have a 4.0 GPA at UT Tyler, and make the argument that my Dual Credit grades shouldn’t determine my admission, which is fantastic since I didn’t get the write about it in my essays.

LOR from Speech teacher, said I was an excellent speech giver, natural leader, and mature compared to my peers.
LOR from head of Business Management at University, said I was a phenomenal student and attentive student who has done great things with the Financial Management Association.
LOR from Economics professor, never saw it, but I finished the class with a 115 and made perfect scores on two of his tests, so probably decent.
LOR from Stat 1 professor (took the class for fun), never saw it, but he really liked me and I made a perfect 100 in the class since there was no bonus, so probably good.
LOR from Calculus tutor at University, never saw it, but probably decent. I helped them tutor Cal 2 sometimes when they were busy and also had the most hours at the tutoring center out of everyone else in the University, so i’m sure he talked about those.
LOR from History professor, see above.
LOR from Calculus 2 professor, see above.

Essays: I consider myself a fantastic writer, so a 9/10 is safe to assume. Also, some of my friends who went to Boston College said my essays were extremely good. I drafted them about 6 times. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to write about my Dual Credit grades specifically because I recently found out that they were factored in.

As you can see, I am in a pretty interesting situation, and I am paranoid about my circumstance. I would like some completely honest opinions on my situation. Also, let me know if there is anything I can do for the thread. Thank you in advance!

@ut2019 Also, I wrote about my passion for finance in my statement of purpose. It was pretty god damn good to be honest. Also wrote the optional essay.

Every year, I always hear the the only thing that they really look into for transfer into McCombs is strictly GPA. I hope you get in, because it looks like you put alot of work in your application!!

@ut2019 Which I am fine with, but i’m just hoping it’s my GPA since i’ve been in college. Do you know anyone in a similar scenario to myself? I found a Computer science major who got in with a 3.73 cumulative, but 4.0 in college on
Reddit but that’s it.

@ut2019 Nobody you knew had to fight the DC grades they made in high school to get in?

I had dual credit for my English class as well, and I remember sending in two transcripts (one from the dual credit college and one from the CAP school) I am not too entirely sure if they combined those GPAs… just because for the dual credit I got an A in that class.

If you sent in two transcripts then they combined them. That’s nice you made an A though. I made a C in mine, partially because the teacher despised me and ran away half way through the year, but complaining doesn’t get you anywhere. Thanks for the feedback anyways, and I can keep you updated if you are curious.

are you sure they combine them? did you ask your advisor that?

I just asked my friend, and he said it was completely separate… but he could have forgotten?

Yeah. That’s the only reason I have a good chance at being denied. I have a 4.0 at uni, but 3.07 from my DC from high school. If you took any kind of Dual Credit, they combine the GPA and use that to determine admission. Since the credits count, the GPA does also unfortunately. Defeats the purpose of Externally transferring, but oh well.

They don’t count your AP grades.

@ut2019 Well god I hope your friend is right, but the head of external transfer admissions told me that they bring them in and put them in the machine that averages them, and then they use that. But I really hope that is not actually the case.

@ut2019 Like I said, I talked to a guy who got into CS with a 3.73 as an external. 3.10 DC, 4.0 University. So your friend may very well be right, and I really hope he is. My entire future depends on it.

Oh… I didn’t know they were able to combine GPAs at two completely different instituations! so you talked to UT about this?
Did you have to transfer your dual credit to be able to apply to mccombs? or could you transfer your dual credit after you got into McCombs?

@ut2019 I sent in my transcript from TVCC (where I technically took the DC) so they had my grades and credit hours. Yeah, they knew I took DC from the information on my high school transcript which was required, and I couldn’t be admitted until I sent that to them.

@ut2019 My claim is that they will know that I made a 4.0 GPA in college from my REC letters, but it would still be really nice to have them separate anyways.
