Essay:
MIT: short ones were about love of roller coasters and wanting to design them, playing the violin. Long ones were about seeking the way my culture/heritage fit sinto my life, disappointment over not making all-state, and an offbeat one on creativity.
Columbia
Humorous approach on being Asian and coming from a town that is about 99.9% white. I talked about how many Asians tend to associate solely or mainly with other Asians and how growing up in a :white: town has influenced me in a good way

Supplements:
For MIT, I submitted a roller tycoon portfolio (for real LOL) to show my creative side. I think this worked well in conjunction with my essay about wanting to engineer and design roller coasters. Do you think I should submit it to Columbia too? I';m thinking not

Recs:
The one from my APUSH teach who is my current Gov teacher was amazing (I got to read it)
Didn't read my second rec but should be very good as I've had the teacher for two years now

Okay, so I have a few questions:

(1) Part 1 of Columbia's application asks if I have conferred with any Columbia staff or faculty/admissions counselors about the admissions process. Obviously I'm not going to email someone if I don't have anything substantial to ask but will I be looked down upon for not doing this?

(2) How does Columbia's interview system work? I know I can;t request one but for RD applicants like myself, will they only give you one if they like your application or is it by ordering of submission?

Umm wow. you have as good of shot as anyone at these schools, especially with MIT I would say. You have a strong interest in designing roller coasters, and presented it in probaly the most creative way EVER! :stuck_out_tongue: Although, honestly I have to say I have my doubt that they will actually take the time to go through it themselves. I know I was considering sending in a supplement to UPenn for clarinet and they told me that they would send it to the music dept. for evaluation, but it would likely not effect my decision unless I was a music major. But who knows! Maybe youll catch a profs eye. Your stats are fantastic and you have a great foundation with your dedication to violin. I,m so excited, the MIT choir lecturer is our guest conductor at my District Chorus festival this spring! Good luck, Im sure youll get in to at least one of your top choices!

MIT - low reach/target

Columbia - target

Carnegie Mellon - target

RPI - target

WPI - safety

SUNY Binghamton - safety

SUNY Buffalo - safety

I have 2 friends who are applying to MIT and their apps/ec’s are extremely lame. “i’m smart, I won math awards, my stats are awesome, the end”
You’ll definitely have an edge with your creativity in your essays!

Had a friend who got into Carnegie Mellon with much lower stats, you’re all set on that. I’ll put money that you get accepted to 3-7 unless they reject you with the “overqualified” bulls***

MIT and Columbia are not matches

MIT - reach

Columbia - high match

Carnegie Mellon - high match

RPI - match

WPI - safety

SUNY Buffalo - safety

Chance me back please!

MIT- reach

Columbia- reach

Carnegie Mellon- hard match

RPI- safety

WPI- safety

SUNY Binghamton- super safety

SUNY Buffalo- super safety

You seem to be a great candidate. Your scores are excellent, and I like your essay ideas. You show great depth with your interest in music as well.

Do you have any leadership positions?

chance me? (: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/812847-chance-student-who-will-return-favor.html

lol, I already chanced you!

And no, no leadership positions really. In my school orchestra, I’ll probably be concertmaster this year since I’m a senior but in a lot of the competitive orchestras I’m in, leadership position basically equates to being #1 in your section. Even the orchestras that say seating is based on what will work best for the orchestra as a whole, that pretty much means in skill order.

Keep the replies coming, I’ll chance back!

Bump! Please

SUNY Buffalo- safety

Have you looked into North Western? If not, check it out…they have a great engineering program.

You’ll certainly get into all the schools on your list, save MIT and Columbia. Though even at those schools, you’ve got a chance. There’s nothing really more to say than that.

Obviously, you’ll get into both SUNYs. . .
MIT is a reach, although I know someone who got in with lower overall scores. . .same for Columbia. . .it’s kind of a crapshoot with these top-tier schools.
CMU should be a match for you.
RPI/WPI are also safeties.

Thanks for chancing me!!

Bump! 10char

Definitely the SUNY’s, as well as WPI…i’d say RPI is a safety also, don’t know enough about Carnegie Mellon to say…
Columbia and MIT are your reaches, but I think everything you said about your essays, especially for MIT, will help you a lot. You showed a ton of passion for roller coaster design, that probably sets you way apart from the clich
