Chance me for MIT/Harvard/Caltech etc, will chance back!

Hi, my name is Jay and I really want to go to MIT and major in biological engineering. I applied early admission to MIT, and was deferred and I'm hoping that people could give me an idea of what my chances are.

I applied to MIT, Harvard, Caltech, Harvey Mudd, U Chicago, Vanderbilt, U Miami, and Johns Hopkins University. (I also got into UF and University of Alabama)

Here are my stats

White Male, both parents have J.D.s, however, my family's income is around $50,000 (My dad has cardiovascular issues that only allow him to work part time, and my mom actually is now a teacher).

I was homeschooled from 2nd grade to 8th grade

I go to a large public high school

ACT Composite: 34
ACT English: 29
ACT Math: 36
ACT Reading: 33
ACT Science: 36
ACT essay: 6 (Which I know is really low)

SAT total, 2130
SAT Math 790
SAT Reading 710
SAT Writing 630 (Low point)
SAT Essay 8 (also low)

SAT subject test Math 1:800
SAT subject test Bio E: 720
SAT subject test Math 2: 800
SAT Subject test Chemistry: 800
SAT Subject test American History: 720

4.809 weighted GPA
3.769 unweighted GPA

Class rank, 23/474 (I really hate English classes)

I've taken 5 AP Classes so far, and I'm taking 4 more this year.
AP Biology: 5
AP World History: 3
AP Enviromental Science: 5
AP Statistics: 4
AP US History: 4
I'm currently taking AP Chem, AP Physics B, AP Calculus AB, and AP American Gov.

I'm a National Merit Scholar Finalist.

I volunteer time with my church's middle school youth group.

I'm on the Boards of National Honor Society (An academic club), Green Club (an Environment club) , and Fellowship of Christian Athletes at my school.

I am the Co-founder of the Science Club at my school and I was the designer of the project we submitted to the Lemleson-MIT InvenTeams competition and we were Finalists in that competition.

I am a starter on the academic competition team at my school.

I am a founding member of Mu Alpha Theta (competitive math team) at my school.

I went to a Georgetown summer program about national security.

I will be interning at a tomato research facility over this upcoming summer.

I did very well in my interviews with MIT and Harvard and I have a total of four letters of recommendation that I submitted to MIT.

An MIT alum in my community wrote a letter to all the members of the admissions commitee on my behalf.

My essays are very good (At least my English teachers thought so), but I'm assuming that most people who are applying to MIT will have very good essays.

MIT, Harvard, Caltech, U Chicago are definite reaches.

Harvey Mudd, Vanderbilt, U Miami, and Johns Hopkins University should be fine, but I’d say Vandy’s a slight reach.

Since you’re looking at the engineering/science field, schools should overlook somewhat the fact that you’re not as good at English. Your math scores are really good! That will help a lot. You also have a good amount of ECs, and founding a club also looks really good.

Hope I helped  Good luck!
Chance me back, please?

Great shot at Vanderbilt, Harvey Mudd, Vanderbilt, U Miami, and Johns Hopkins University.
Great shot at U Chicago as well if your essay was fantastic.

MIT, Harvard, Caltech are reaches.

chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1294761-chance-me-will-chance-back-4.html</a></p>

Thanks for chancing me! You have incredible stats and very solid ECs. Although your list features some very selective schools, I am confident that you will get in to a few of them. MIT, Harvard, and Caltech are all obviously reaches, but I think you have a great shot at Hopkins, Vanderbilt, Harvey Mudd, UMiami, and UChicago. Regardless of what happens, you will end up in the right place. Be confident and good luck!

I would tend to agree with most other people, with one notable exception: Harvey Mudd. I would list Harvey Mudd as a reach for you–in the category of CalTech, Harvard, and MIT. While Harvey Mudd’s acceptance rate is higher than the other three, it is also much more self selective than Harvard and MIT. Very, very few people outside of math and science have heard of Harvey Mudd. Also, it is a math and science school which in itself is self selective. Therefore, its applicant pool as a whole is much more “qualified” than those at MIT and Harvard. Also, Harvey Mudd is much more of a liberal arts school than CalTech. Harvey Mudd will NOT like that you got a 6 (HOLY @$%^ TRY TO GET THAT UP) on your essay and a 29 in english. The middle 50% at Harvey Mudd for English is 32-35. 29 is far enough out of that range that it is concerning especially for a college that cares about being more well rounded (whereas CalTech again cares less). Also, the fact that you consistently scored relatively low on the english sections and essay sections will be at least slightly indicative of your essay writing skills. Essays are huge at Harvey Mudd (as they are at Harvard and MIT). For all of these reasons, I would put Harvey Mudd as a reach for you. I think its wrong for everyone else to assure you that you have great chances at one of the most difficult schools in the country to gain admissions to. This doesn’t by any means mean that you have no chance. You have good extracurriculars and that will help, but I can’t say that you have an amazing chance at getting in.

Your classes and ec’s show you enjoy math and science. You could probably get into the schools right now but if you brought up your Sat score a little more into the 2300s you could definitely be a top contender.

You have a good shot at Vanderbilt, Harvey Mudd, and U Miami
Harvard, Cal-tech, U Chicago, and Johns Hopkins are reaches, but you have great achievements and your ACT is great so should have an edge.
Chance Back?

Thanks for the chances! When you guys all agree that MIT, Caltech, and Harvard are all reaches, could you give me a percent chance of acceptance?

Anybody out there?

You have to realize that no one here has the authority to give you a percent chance of acceptance. It is WAY too subjective, especially at schools like Harvard, MIT, Harvey Mudd, and CalTech. If you are an oboist and they need to fill an oboe spot in the band, then you have a better chance of getting in. If you did research in Egypt and they just opened a new Egyptology department and again need to fill chairs, you have a huge edge. It’s all about the little things. That being said, there are some basic standards that need to be met. The 6 on the essay (as I said before) and 29 on english could VERY easily be the defining factor. So, if I absolutely had to give a percent, I would say 3% for MIT (very hard to be accepted from the deferred pool), 4% for Harvard and CalTech, and maybe 9% for Harvey Mudd? But again, those numbers mean nothing. You just have to wait and see!

I’d say your weakness is your UW gpa. i also might be worried about one demensionality in your ec’s… your strongest points are your competitions and your science club. but at the same time it’s ok to have a strength in one thing (you aren’t majoring in every subject, you’re a prospective biological engineer). but at schools like harvard and especially chicago they probably would want strong interest in other endeavors and that could set you back. you’re definitely into U miami. contrary to the person above me, i think you have a good chance at HMU. you applied to tough schools and a lot of it is arbitrary. you’re obviously intelligent enough for any of these schools, it comes down to filling a class. as a senior in high school and a prospective english major i don’t think i’m qualified to give you percentages, also because the admissions process isn’t about numbers, its about you as a whole.
you’re a very qualified applicant and you’ll end up where you’re meant to be. engineering is a great major that gives you a much better chance of success than almost any other nowadays. best of luck! it’ll be over so soon

Thanks so much for the chances!

MIT admissions are anounced on pi day at tau time!

“Great shot at U Chicago as well if your essay was fantastic.”

There is no such thing as great shot at Chicago. RD acceptance rate is below 9%.

Harvard, MIT, Cal Tech, Chicago: High Reaches
JHU, Vanderbilt, Mudd: Reaches but better chances

UChicago and Vanderbilt should be high targets, while Harvey Mudd, UMiami, and Johns Hopkins should be perfect. MIT, Caltech, and Harvard are high reaches though, I think.

Chance me? :D

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1300471-chance-me-ill-chance-you-back.html#post13984183</a></p>

I got rejected at both MIT and Caltech :(

Dont loose hope Jay, whatever happens, happens for a reason and I am sure god has something better for you! :)

Thanks Crystal! God does have a plan! Romans 8:28

MIT, CalTech, Harvard, and Harvey Mudd are reaches, although not impossible. Your ECs show that you have a really strong interest in math and science, which could make you seem more favorable to the admissions committee (and they may overlook your less outstanding English scores). UChicago and Vanderbilt are pretty likely, Johns Hopkins is near the middle.
Also, have you considered applying for any scholarships? This may help your chances.
Good luck! I’m sure you’ll get into a great school no matter what. :)

Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1304596-chance-me-ill-chance-back.html</a></p>

“UChicago and Vanderbilt are pretty likely”

People still don’t get it!
UChicago RD admit rate is below 9%.
You need to be “lucky” to get into UChicago.

Good luck to you and I really hope you get into UChicago. It is an amazing place.
