Northeastern is my top school. I applied EA and am hella nervous about getting rejected
As you probably already know, Northeastern is a very solid match for you. Not more anyone can tell you other than that, so I’d work on distracting yourself until January
My only note is that if you haven’t tracked admissions closely, deferrals are very common in EA, but those are absolutely not rejections, especially for someone with stats in/above both middle 50%'s like you have. Coming from EA a deferral arguably is the hardest result because you have to wait longer, so I’d say from a mental/nerves standpoint, brace for that and then you can be excited if it’s an acceptance come January.
Good luck!
Agree with the above. You seem like a solid candidate. I suspect you also had a great essay, since you highlighted your writing awards and your language award will help since NU has become very international focused. There is no need to be nervous, life is too short. And when you get accepted, it will be just the beginning of stresses - exams - coops - eventually jobs and promotion. It can be overwhelming. Distracting yourself sounds like great advice. And if by chance you don’t get what you want, something better will come along. Relax, persevere, and all will be well.
@PengsPhils - Hi. Curious. To the extent to which deferrals at NEU are common for EA applicants, is there a tipping point where an EA tends to be admitted early? Thanks!
@BrooklynRye You know that line every college feeds you about being holistic? This is exactly where it comes into play. Too many factors to even guesstimate a tipping point. I think sometimes they will even defer top candidates they think are using Northeastern as a safety so they withdraw when they get into one of their top options. I’ve seen very low stats get accepted while very good matches get deferred, often to get accepted RD. You really can’t tell what was an overpowering EC, essay, etc. But just know that deferrals are absolutely not soft rejections when it comes to Northeastern.
Thanks @PengsPhils. I’ve never much believed in the ‘holistic’ admissions pitch. Perhaps it comes into play deep in the weeds, but somehow top schools maintain their average standardized test scores and GPA levels year in and year out. Tough to do that if one is truly giving substantial weight to factors other than those two. In any case, what I mean by “tipping point” is the evaluation that a student, with great stats, genuinely wants to go to NEU, but does not want to apply ED. The main reason for this I find is financial circumstances. The university must know this. I hear you on why the university might defer that candidate, but is there any reading of tea leaves where they take a shot believing the EA candidate actually does want to go there?
I completely agree with the quotes around holistic there, but this is truly where it comes into play. Where they get that ‘belief’ in the EA candidate is likely from holistic factors. And there’s plenty of 35 ACT 4.7W GPA’s accepted EA as well as 31ACT 3.9W GPA’s. I would have to believe that comes out of the holistic side, whether it be recommendations, essay, demonstrated interest, extracurriculars, you name it. There’s no magic tipping point, sorry
In terms of knowing that you would have ED’d but didn’t because of financial factors, there’s really no way for them to know that. Demonstrate interest though and it won’t matter too much. ED isn’t really a big advantage at Northeastern anyways so I wouldn’t sweat it. It’s worth also noting most high stat deferrals end with RD acceptances in my experience.
Good luck and I’d second the advice for you - go distract yourself until January
Thanks, Pengs. FYI, stats: ACT = 34; Weighted GPA = 4.0; ECs = Head lighting director for school district productions, Robotics team captain and head programmer, Track team, Japanese club. Prospective Electrical Engineering Major with certifications/facility in multiple programming including SolidWorks & AutoCad, both of which are part of freshman year Cornerstone. Also already submitted Physics AP 4, with Calc and others pending. Thanks for any insights!
