Chance me for RD?

GPA: 3.41

Sophomore year: 3.0/3.22 - 1 H
Junior year: 3.5/3.67 - 1 AP - APUS (4)
Senior year Q1: 3.83 - 3 AP's
Also took a Macroeconomics class at UVM over the summer from Junior to Senior year and got an A.

SAT: 2060
M: 720 CR: 730 W: 610

ECs:
Founder and Head Delegate of school's Model UN (11, 12)
Paid-work, 15 hrs/wk (10,11,12)
JV Lacrosse (9)
Snowboarding outside of school every weekend during winter all 4 years.

That's pretty much it. I intend to major in Economics or Poli Sci or both.
I know my GPA is kind of low and my ECs aren't spectacular. Would it be possible to get in without a visit? GWU is not at all close to my home and it would be hard to do a visit.

I think your chances are good. Although your GPA isn’t the best (and you’re probably not in the top 10% of your class) your SAT score is great and I think your Model UN EC shows initiative and leadership (two traits the GW seems to cling to).

If you apply with the intent of of majoring in Poli Sci (if you apply to the school directly or mention it in your essay) it’ll be a little more difficult for you since that program is one of the most sought-after of GW. Don’t be afraid to apply as ‘undecided’ to the Columbian College with the intent to putting in a lot of hard work your first year then applying to the program.

Good luck!

GW Grad, 2011

Thanks for the response! How competitive is the Economics program, because that is really my number one choice for a major?

Overall, I think you have a decent shot at getting in. As the previous poster mentioned, your GPA definitely raises some concerns. But it appears you managed to get those grades up by your junior and senior year, which will give some positive insight to your academic commitment. Additionally, I think concerns about your GPA will be off-set by your standardized test scores.

It appears you have a solid commitment to your extracurriculars, which is a huge plus. Ensure your essays are spotless and your recommendations are glowing.

In response to your question about the competitiveness of the economics program, the admissions committee does not evaluate your application based on how well you would be deemed to fit into the major. It utilizes a holistic review in order to evaluate all aspects of your application.

Oh man your chosing the toughest school to get into in GW.

Your SAT scores are amazing; GPA is not going to drop your chances because they look for rounded students and smart students who will push their SAT average up
