Subjective:
Extracurricular: Chemistry club (president), environmental club (president), robotics club, varsity tennis (captain), I participate in USTA junior tennis tournaments and have won multiple junior tournaments
Job/Work Experience: This summer I got accepted into an extremely competitive research program at Yale Med School and will be doing research with a medical school professor for a couple of months
Volunteer/Community service: After my freshman year of high school I volunteered at a local preschool for about 6-8 hours per week for one month
Summer Activities: Multiple backpacking trips out west, engineering program at UPenn for three weeks, Great Books program at Amherst, volunteer work mentioned above, a lot of tennis tournaments, and this summer the research program at Yale Med
Recommendations: I expect them to be very good! I have very good relationships with all of my teachers and especially my GC

Other:
I will not be applying for financial aid for any schools
Intended major: Not 100% sure but mostly likely chemical engineering or biomedical engineering
State: CT
School Type: EXTREMELY competitive prep school
Ethnicity: White
Gender: F
Hooks: I am a double legacy at Brown, I am also a legacy at Georgetown (my dad got his JD from Georgetown)

Your profile is eerily similar to mine (2320 SAT, USNCO Semi-Finalist, etc.). What is your unweighted GPA? Also, have you been in contact with any coaches for athletic recruiting? As things stand now, here is my opinion:

Yale,: Reach
Princeton,: Reach (a little less so than Yale)
Penn,: Low Reach (If you applied ED, this would become a high match)
Stanford,: Reach (Don’t waste your time applying SCEA.)
Brown,: High Match/Low Reach (Superb chances ED)
Duke,: High Match/Low Reach (In ED)
Rice,: High Match (In ED, possibly with Merit $)
USC,: Low Match (Merit $)
Vandy,: High Match (Apply EA for maximum Merit $ consideration)
JHU,: High Match
Georgetown,: High Match
Carnegie Mellon: Match

Your legacy status at Georgetown and Brown, especially at the latter, is highly enviable. I realize you probably do not wish to apply ED to any particular school, as this would likely prevent you from finding out your Yale and Princeton admissions decisions; however, applying ED at almost any of the schools listed above would result in an almost guarenteed acceptance. Best of luck!

Thanks so much for your reply! A couple of questions - for Stanford you said that I shouldn’t apply SCEA, why not out of curiosity? Feel free to be brutally honest, I don’t want to waste my time b/c apps are a pain!! Also, do you think if I applied early to Yale and had a good recommendation from the medical school professor at Yale, would that increase my chances? THANK YOU!

EDIT: GPA isn’t reported by my school, but my GC told me that my weighted average is an A, so unweighted it’s an A- I’m guessing…

If you have time, check out the Stanford SCEA results thread for the class of 2014. The vast majority of kids accepted SCEA were “hooked” in some way. For example, a number of highly-qualified minority students, legacy applicants, or students with some other intangible “hook” were accepted early this past year, while most of the Asian/Caucasian applicants with high SATs, GPAs, and academic accolades were rejected or deferred. Don’t prevent yourself from applying to other schools early for Stanford’s sake; rather, get stellar 7th semester grades and improve the strength of your application.

I am not very familiar with Yale admissions, but a glowing reccomendation letter from a Yale professor might be enough to tip an already-stellar applicant such as yourself into the acceptance pile. Remember, Yale is a crapshoot for anyone, but you have a (relatively) good shot. If you think your application will be strengthened by your 7th semester grades, then apply RD.

I appreciate the chancing offer, really, I do, but considering I already went through the hellacious college admissions process, it’s not necessary :)

haha yeah I realized that after I posted – I’m an idiot! Thanks so much, especially about the Stanford thing. I will definitely take a closer look at that thread. Thanks again!

The ivies are ipossible to say in general because your key copetition will be students fro your own HS. College will know where you rank.

If your rank is nearly as good as your scores, you’re a shoo in for Brown and GTown, but they would probably expect you to apply ED.

wait so your own unweighted GPA is unreported?

Other than that, everything else looks solid, it’ll probably come down to a lot of the essays and how well you can express your passions and/or yourself to the colleges that you are applying to. You should be fine for all the schools except the upper IVYs and stanford, though I bet that yale program would help you at Yale.

A lot of prep schools don’t report GPAs because they’re academically rigorous or whatever… but I would estimate that my unweighted GPA is an A- and weighted it’s an A

Yes, but the prep schools give colleges all the info they need to figue out ranks and for those preps well known at top colleges, they have years of data so it’s not the slightest mystery. Top publics do the sae thing and it’s not about rigor, it’s about the highly competitive student bodies/parents they want to keep a little less overtly competitive.

oh okay… thanks for the clarification!

Oh wow. You are in FOR SUREEEE!!! I envy your summer activities though :frowning: And your double legacy at Brown. Being a full-pay applicant will also increase your chances.

Yale,: Reach
Princeton,: Reach
Stanford,: Reach
Penn,: Low Reach
Brown,: High Match/Low Reach
Duke,: High Match/Low Reach
Georgetown,: High Match
Rice,: Match/High-Match
JHU,: High-Match
Vandy,: Match
Carnegie Mellon: Match
USC,: Could probably be considered a safety :)

All in all, you seem like an extremely well-rounded individual, and if you don’t make it into all the schools mentioned above, then…I think I might just die.

BTW, I completely envy your stats :D

I would say a match for everything except, Stanford and UPenn low reaches, and Princeton and Yale are reaches. You do have a solid resume, it’s just that the ivies are pretty unpredictable in addmissions.

I would agree with most everything the other folks have said, but I believe that your research program at Yale will put you in a good position over there. If you make a fantastic impression (which I assume you will), you have a better chance than what has been suggested here (not much better, but still). You said you are doing two independent research projects, do you mind me asking what they are? BTW, I’m completely jealous of that research program, and wish I lived in CT instead of the frozen dairy state of WI.

@JoshByron Thankss… it’s been a long road thats for sure

What do you do in Chemistry Club?

nothing too dense or anything… a lot of hands-on activities; we try to get kids excited about chem, whether they are taking a regular course or got an A+ in AP. Chemistry is something that i am passionate about so I love seeing some of my peers get excited about the activities

wow! i think you have a shot at all of them (especially brown because of the double legacy!)

your ECs and SATs are superb. i wouldn’t worry about a thing.

BUMP! (sorry to do this haha)

Hey, what USTA section are you in?

Wow you’re resume is extremely impressive. Particularly for Brown!

Yale: High Reach (for everyone)
Princeton,: Reach, you fit their profile
Penn,: Low Reach
Stanford,: High Reach (for everyone)
Brown,: Match cuz of double-legacy and book award (I don’t know if the book award means anything tho)
Duke,: High Match
Rice: match
USC: Low Match (Merit $)
Vandy: match
JHU,: match
Georgetown: low reach
Carnegie Mellon: low match

There’s a very high chance that you’ll get into all of them except for the HYPSM
