I'm not going to list all of my EC's right now because I have stuff to do, but I will list a couple.

Cross Country 4 years and Soccer for 1

10 Years of Piano

Here's my hook, I've always had a strong passion for Spanish. During the summer before sophomore year I contacted some of my friends in Spain and ended up living with one of their families for the entire year. Everything was in Spanish, I was the only English speaker there, and it was not done through a program. By the end of the year I had become fluent in the language which I believe is a big accomplishment. All of my essays are focused on my passion for the language and the hardships of living somewhere at 14, with no other Americans or English speakers. All of it was self-study and I am the only one in my family who is bilingual.

Ethnicity: Caucasian
School: Private Jesuit High School in Philly. Known as the most difficult school in the area. Great connections with schools like UPENN and Georgetown.

I live in Pennsylvania so I don't think I have a great shot at schools like UCSB or UCB. If you could suggest some California schools that would fit me that would be great. Thanks!

Edit: I will be applying to all of these schools as a Spanish major. Also I'll be applying EA.

First, you need to get a higher score for Stanford and UCB. Second, it is strongly recommended to have two SAT2 for Stanford. Third, your course load is not really rigorous and is not very competitive among other students in California for top schools. UCLA and below should be your target range but there is nothing to hold you back from applying to reach schools.

Thanks billcsho. Regarding the SAT scores, I’m not going to send them because I got a 33 on the ACT which I think is high enough for these schools. It’s a reach but I’ll still try.

Actually you are quite a competitive applicant, considering that you’ve centered your essays and showed how your ec’s tie into your major… I think you have a great chance.

Thanks! That’s what I was going for haha. I feel like top colleges like to see students that are deeply interested in a topic and have pursued it at a young age.

Please don’t set your hopes on Stanford. While you have great stats, they just are not Stanford stats. Your passion for Spanish is not a hook and the rigor of your courses won’t hold up. I’m afraid Berkeley will be the same. You will definitely get in great schools - I would think UCSB will be a good match.

My hopes aren’t set on Stanford. It’s my reach school. And if going to a country at 14 to learn a language and becoming fluent in it isn’t a passion, I don’t know what is…

First, you should have put your ACT score in your original post. Second, two SAT2 scores are still strongly recommended by Stanford disregarding whether you send ACT or SAT1. Anyway, UCLA and lower UCs should be good matches for you.
