Chance me for Tech!

Hey all! I’m currently a junior at the moment, but I was hoping I could be chanced for this school since this is most definitely one of my top schools I want to apply to.

Some stuff:

  • Asian Female (Chinese)
  • OOS (Illinois)

Scores:
GPA: 3.84 UW, 4.24 W
SAT: 1470 (700 Reading/Writing, 770 Math) - this may not be a final score. This is the first test I took, with my second SAT being worse than this one. Will that have to be submitted? If yes, will it be seen as a weakness? Should I take the test again/try the ACT?

APs I have taken so far: Computer Science A (5), Chinese (not released), Calculus AB (not released), US History (not released), English Language and Composition (not released)

APs I will take senior year: Computer Science Principles, Statistics, Themes (AP English Lit), Biology, Physics 2, Government

Extracurriculars:

  • Key Club (9th)
  • Future Business Leaders of America (9-11, doing it senior year)
  • Chinese Club (10-11, not sure if I will continue this)
  • Peer Helpers (11, doing it senior year) [Leadership Position: Awareness Week Coordinator]
  • Peer Tutors (10-11, tutored Chinese, will continue senior year tutoring somewhere else)
  • National Honor Society [Leadership Position: Charity Liaison]
  • National Chinese Honor Society [volunteered the library and watched over children while teaching them different aspects of Chinese culture such as making lanterns]
  • Girls Fencing (9-11, not sure if I should continue this) [JV for all 3 years]
  • Entering a new ELL Conversation Club senior year, a new club designed to help ELL students with their conversations and overall improve their English. This will start senior year.

Other Important Info:

  • Played the piano since I was 5 years old, quit after 9th grade. Passed the level 12 theory exam (the very last level), getting awards at the royal conservatory (British awards for passing their performance and written examinations)
  • First generation student, as both of my parents went to college in China
  • A combined total of 112.5 service hours throughout my school year

Awards:

  • Received Science Scholar Ribbon for 2 years for getting A- or above throughout all terms in my science class (if relevant, not sure if it is because it’s a school award)
  • Inspiring Service Honor Award (earned for completing 40 hours of service with 8+ activities this year)
  • President’s Education Award (received in 8th grade during graduation, will this at all count?)
  • 4th place in an FBLA Area Competition in 9th grade for Computer Applications, made it to state (but unfortunately don’t know final results)
  • 5th place in FBLA Area Competition in 11th grade for Public Service Announcement, did not make it to state
  • 3rd place in a fencing JV competition

Desired Major: Computer Science

Sorry for the lengthy post!

@techytechtech Apply to GaTech by Oct 15 for the best chance from OOS. There are posts about GaTech OOS admissions getting harder and harder, Also apply to UIUC. Its a better price for you, being in state, and arguably ranked a bit higher than GaTech, although they are similar in quality.

UIUC offers a combined CS/math BS degree, and a combined CS/statistics degree as well as CS:
https://cs.illinois.edu/academics/degree-program-options/bs-computer-science-engineering

At GaTech, doing the theory CS thread will be similar to the math/CS degree at UIUC. GaTech’s computational thread and other threads, includes statistics too, so you will get plenty of math at GaTech if you want it.

Also consider Purdue U, its a bit easier for admissions and a good undergrad CS program. Purdue offers more merit based scholarships for your stats. GaTech does not have merit based awards beyond a small number of very elite leadership oriented Provost awards, that are next to impossible to win, if money matters. UIUC and probably Purdue will be less expensive for you than GaTech.

Finally consider U of Maryland if you are thinking cybersecurity might be an area of interest. They offer some
special CS living groups and a very top program as well.
