Chance me for UC's please!

Hi, so I've just registered at my California Community College for the Fall semester, and it appears it'll be my last one. I have a few questions, but first I'll get my stats and such out of the way.

It's not necessary for me to include high school stuff is it? If it is, I can dig up some old info, but here is my SAT at least:
700 Reading, 610 Math, 660 Writing

College:
Current GPA - 2.84
^^^This GPA is going to change quite a bit by the end of the fall semester.
There are a few classes I stopped going to and failed, so with those grades raised the GPA will be:
GPA after Fall 2011 - 3.345
^^This is, of course, assuming that I get all A's, but I absolutely intend to.
Also, I have some EXTREME family issues that have hindered me, which I'll describe in my essay.

However, I see that the deadline for applying for Fall 2012 is November 30, 2011. Which means that my GPA will still be 2.84 when I apply. Is this a major issue? If it is a big issue, what are my options? As of now, it seems that Fall 2011 will be my last semester at my CCC. But, I know that you can like tell the university you're transferring to what classes you intend to take in the Spring, so would it look better if I take classes in the Spring also?

This is kind of a crappy situation. I wish my GPA was 3.345 now instead of later. Anyway, the schools I'd like you to chance me for, if you please, are:
UCLA
UC Berkeley
UC Irvine
UC Santa Cruz
UC San Diego
UC Santa Barbara
Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo)
Cal Poly (Pomona)
Potentially various other CSU's
NYU (for kicks)
Stanford (for kicks)

Also, my intended major is Linguistics. I know some schools don't offer that, but I've looked at the acceptance rates for UCLA and those for Linguistics are much higher than that for, say, engineering.

So, hopefully some people will chance me! If you chance me, I will try to the best of my ability to chance you back, or at least give feedback.

Also, if anyone has any other suggestions for schools that I should consider, preferably in California and with a linguistics major, do tell! Lastly, does anyone suppose I ought to take one more English class? I have the requirements done, but mayhaps another good grade in a writing course would look good.

unfortunately they will initially only see your lower GPA. if you really want to go to a UC then i would wait a year and boost your GPA. however there are some Cal States that will accept a GPA under 3.0.

good luck! i myself spent years kicking a-s-s and getting A’s in order to correct some (try 4 c’s and an f!) academic “mistakes” from the past. it sucks, but was definitely worth it! if you are serious about getting back on track, give it another year and have a GPA that you can stand behind.

If you had registered for some summer courses, then it could have significantly increased your GPA for the fall. Take some PE classes because it also helps boost your GPA. If you manage to make a a 3.34 at the end of fall, then you have a good chance of transferring into UC Irvine, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and maybe San Diego. You will most likely get accepted into the CSUs as well, though Berkeley and UCLA, along with NYU and Standford seem unlikely.

^^ don’t know what they’re talking about. You apply in November but your fall grades still count towards your UC gpa. The only semester that doesn’t count is Spring. When your fall semester is over you have to submit a grade update of your fall grades.

Thanks for the responses. Can you apply to the UC’s multiple times? Because I would be alright with waiting a year, but it’d be nice to try this year anyway. If I do apply this Fall, does the university review your application and then check up again later to see how you did in the Fall semester?

Also, I am taking one summer course online, but couldn’t take any more because it would’ve made it impossible for me to keep my job.

Oh heckyeah. What do you think about my chances, wizard55? And especially for UCLA? I should’ve mentioned in my original post that UCLA is my top choice, even though it’s tough to get in.

I’m not quite sure of linguistics at ucla. But, anthropology isn’t too hard to get into, and i know it’s not too far off from a linguistics major. You should also complete the TAP program at your school. It gives you a competitive edge, while also allowing you to apply for an alternate major as well.

I’m definitely gonna look into the TAP thing. It’s rather confusing though. My school’s website lists one professor as the coordinator of the TAP program, but when I talked to him he barely knew anything. It seems, though, that you have to complete the honors program before you can do TAP. I should’ve done the honors program but didn’t, so now I think I’d definitely need at least a year to complete the requirements.

Do you know anything about whether you can apply more than once?

You may try to apply as many times as you wish. As far as I know, they won’t have your application on file if you were rejected or rescinded.

If you’re confident you WILL get a 3.34 by the end of your Fall semester, then you will surely have a shot getting into at least one UC. UCs will review the overall GPA you get after the Fall semester, regardless of when the deadline for the application is. They will require you to send in your Fall semester grades sometime in January and then review the actual application in February or March.

Ok, that’s very helpful. Good to know the GPA is calculated in the fall. I just looked at the available summer classes and I’ve actually found one that I NEED to take, which isn’t offered in the fall. If I took 9 units this summer and 5 in the fall, I could have a 3.4… got some work to do, either way! Thanks!

Well, the honors program is considered TAP. If you are going to stay at a CC for an extra year, you might as well look into the honors program. Also, UCs don’t necessarily look at your overall GPA for admissions, just the courses that are UC transferrable.

^ oops i thought he meant his GPA would be 2.88 after the FALL semester. obviously fall grades will be counted! why was that even a question?

do TAP. and get A’s.

I think you’re fine. Get above a 3.3 this fall and you’re pretty much into most UC’s…even UCSD. If your major isn’t impacted, you have a good shot.last year people with 3.2 no tag got in so I’m guessing this year… You’d need maybe a 3.3+. What do you guys think?

Hi UCKitty thank you for the thread :)

Sephiro,

You will most likely get into all the schools except UCLA, Berkeley, NYU and Stanford. You have 5% at NYU and .000000002387% chance at Stanford. For UCLA, you need at least a 3.6 to be competitive for non impacted majors and 3.7 for Berkeley. Stanford is just a waste of money to throw them $90 for your app to be glanced at. I’d focus on UCSD or UCI. They are good schools w/o rediculous GPA standards. Good Luck.
