Chance me for UCs, University of the Pacific, Uof Washington, Northeastern, USC, NYU

Hi! I'm currently a junior (CA resident), and I'm really scared about applying this year...it would be awesome if you can possibly chance me for schools such as UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, northeastern, University of Washington, George Washington University, Cal Poly SLO, University of the Pacific if possible. Thanks!

My school is really competitive and send like 22 kids to UC Berkeley per year (many more are accepted but chose other schools) and at least 6 kids to Ivy schools
No valedictorian or class ranking in my school
My GPAs are as followed:
1. cumulative gpa - 4.09
2. cumulative unweighted - 3.76
3. ca cal grant gpa - 3.56
4. weighted 10-12 a-g gpa- 4.17
I am 3/4 Korean and 1/4 White
Classes:
Sophomore: AP Euro, Honors Chemistry, English 10, Yoga, Honors Precalc w/ Trig, VB.net programming, japanese 2
Junior (current schedule): AP Chemistry, AP Music Theory, Japanese 3, AP Lang, AP US History, AP Calc AB
Senior: AP Gov (comp&us), Honors Japanese, Econ, Child Development, AP Bio, AP Calc BC, Womens lit
---> My senior schedule is less rigourous than my junior year schedule due to major scheduling conflicts. All of the weighted class over at my school are afternoon classes, which isn't exactly ideal unless you have a time turner :(

SAT: 2050 (im retaking this in October ahahaha dont laugh at my score please)
Subject tests:
730 Math II

Hook: sobbing i wish i had a hook... :( Can I count myself as a first gen if my mom did not go to school here but my dad went to a school over at NY?

I know that my gpa and testing scores are really low especially since one of my close friends died earlier in the school year, but I'm really hoping that maybe my ec will help me a bit :( I'm going to try my best to write a killer essay :((

I am also planning on applying to UCSD as a non-impacted major (Physiology & Neuroscience). I will also be doing early decision to UoP’s pre-dental program.

Not sure if that changes things

Bummmppppp

Bumppppp</3 please guys

So, I’m biased as heck. I don’t really like the UCs that much, but I’m full Korean, and I’m going to USC with money to spare next year.
My stats were similar to yours in some aspects. I had a 3,69 UW GPA, 4.17 Weighted GPA but I also had some family situations going on in Sophomore year, and I ended up taking 12 IB/AP courses. My SAT was 2290. And I had fair EC’s and a strong Essay. But, not to scare you anything, but I got rejected by ALL the UC’s I applied for. Literally. (UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCIrvine, and most of these schools I was a match for.)
Your EC’s seem fantastic, and sorry to break this to you, I don’t think you’re first generation.

Here’s how holistic review works: They look at each part of your application separately and give you a score on each part. There’s only a certain number of points you can get in each category. And they end up taking the number with the highest points. Of course they do count in family hardship and extc while giving you those points, but the misconception kids have is that one part of the application that is amazing will not get you in, because they can only give you so much credit for so little of the application. You get what I’m saying? (This is how a UCLA admissions rep explained holistic review to me, btw) You can’t just expected to get in on one part of the app, you have to be well-rounded.
So basically, you need to bring your SAT up, have strong letters of rec and write a killer essay. Don’t just rely on one portion of the application, bc there’s only so much one portion of the app can do for you.

UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, northeastern, University of Washington, George Washington University, Cal Poly SLO, University of the Pacific

I’m basing this on your current SAT score btw. IT’s really hard to break that 2100 barrier, because then its just pure skill, and the SAT curves are harsh.

UCB: Reach [The thing I’ve heard about Berkeley is though, they are incredible at holistic review. They really know how to factor in family situations and stuff, so idk, you might have a chance, especially if you get your SAT up]
UCLA: Low Reach [Another thing is UC’s prefer higher GPA than testing scores]
UCSD, UCSB, UCD: Match
UW: Match
Cal Poly: Match
USC: Reach
NYU: High Match

I can elaborate a little more on USC since I’m going there next year. Here’s their 2014 Admit data:

Average GPA: 3.82 (unweighted, and these kids probably had tons of APs and IBs.)
Middle 50% SAT: 2100- 2250
Acceptance rate: 17.8%

This is what they told me at an admit reception I attended a few months earlier. Btw, it really doesn’t matter how competitive your school is as long as you take advantage of what your school offers academically.

Also, no one really looks too much at your Weighted GPA when theyre making decisions. shrugs

Hope that helped. Good luck!

@iamnotready
Wow. Our stats and results are really similar. I took IB classes (Math HL, Biology HL, English HL, and 3 SLs). I had a 3.66 UWGPA, a 4.29 WGPA, and a 4.00 UCGPA. My SAT score is 2300. I was waitlisted/rejected by UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCI, and Cal Poly SLO. I did not apply to USC though. :(

@Mangiafuoco‌ I feeeeeeeellll your pain… I took IB Math SL year 1 & 2, English HL, History HL, AP music theory, Music Theory HL, SL Biology, AP Chem. That’s like 12 courses of IB/AP.

DUDE THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE UC’s THIS YEAR I SWEAR. Like okay, UCB, UCLA, UCSD, I could kind of understand… but like when UCIrvine rejected me I was just like there is something fishy going on.

In my biased opinion, I feel like the UC’s are somewhat, no offense to them, broke. Bc UC’s would have to give me so much money bc I’m a low income Asian kid. They’d probably rather take one of the higher income Asian kids with similar stats than me.

The UC’s cut down on Asian applicant admits by like 15% this year and increased international admits by 15% overall. It’s effing ridiculous.

I even got a supplement request for UCLA, and I thought I was going to have some luck there, but it was mostly stuff about my family problems, and financial struggles, and my supplemental essay was good, I just think my financial situation impacted me a LOT more than it should have in the UC system though.

@Mangiafuoco‌ and people can tell me whatever they want, but like I know for a fact my Essays were good. I had a harvard law student help me look over it and someone who used to be on UC Berkeley admissions board.

I feel for you so hard. Where did you end up going, if I may ask?

Also I’m just a little bit curious, are you by any chance a low income student? No offense, but I have some crazy theory.

This one girl who has literally a 4.5 Weighted GPA, 15 APs, 4.0 UW GPA, was a low income student and Asian and had a 2300 SAT. She literally got rejected from every UC she applied for.

@iamnotready
I will attend UCSB. I am not a low income student, but I am Asian. I am surprised that the low income girl with the 4.0 UW GPA was rejected by every UC she applied for. Did she apply to the mid-tier UCs (UCD, UCI, UCSB)?

I think my rejections/waitlists were due to my low GPA and my major (computer science). Other people say that a 4.00 UCGPA is not low at all, but I disagree with them. I believe that a 4.10+ UCGPA is necessary to be a match for the mid-tier UCs.

Do you know your UCGPA?

@Mangiafuoco‌ Oh, if your major was computer science, then thats a completely different story/
And that one girl I was talking about got rejected to UC Irvine and UC Davis…

And no, I didn’t really bother figuring out my UC GPA, but I think it was similar to yours. The thing is, my major was psychology, and my back up was sociology or something like that, which is not an impacted major at all.

I don’t think you need a 4.10++ UC GPA for the mid-tier UCs, maybe for your major perhaps, but I applied as a humanities major.

We may have had similar stats, but your major puts you into like a different bracket. It’s WAYY harder to get accepted as a computer science major.

I went to an SAT cram school, and kids with lower stats than me got into a lot of the UCs, and the only difference between them and me was that my parents made wayyy less money than they did. We all had our essays reviewed by similar people extc, extc.

And I don’t know its so much easier to get accepted as a rich international student nowadays. shrugs
