UW GPA: 3.6 (could drop to 3.4)
UC W GPA: 4.0 (could drop to 3.8, so also chance for these two), something to take into account is that sophomore year I took Accelerated English as no Honors is offere, and Algebra 3-4 w/ Trig which some colleges weight, so outside UC it could very well weight to a 4.2 or 4.4.

SAT: 2200

Prestigious high school in California, ranked among the top public schools in the nation.

200+ hours comm. service at a single organization since sophomore year

AP Tests: AP European History- 5, AP Chemistry-5, AP US History- 4 (I have other AP classes but have not yet taken the AP test since we obviously haven't taken it yet).

ECs: 2 years on varsity volleyball team, ranked top 5 in the country consistently throughout the entire season, #1 on occasion. Played club volleyball for 7 years on a team consistently ranked in the top 3 in the nation, often #1 or 2 (since freshman year when rankings are first relevant).

I have 2 very good letters of recommendation, one from my AP Chem teacher and a personal letter from a close family friend, a successful businessman, attended Princeton (not sure if this is relevant or whatever). My essays are very good, or so I've been told (and if I may say so myself, I agree).

Two minor things to take into account: my dad lives in New York so I actually get an in-state residency advantage for NYU if that matters, and my aunt has worked at UCSD medical for years.

If my GPA were to be a 3.4 and 3.8 instead of a 3.6 and 4.0, how much do you think my chances would be affected?

UCSD, UCSB your safety
UCLA, NYU, USC, your match,(don’t know much about pepperdine)
Stanford some chance but you’d better prepare for the worst. GPA’s not amazing enough. you must get an amazing GPA if you want to get into a top5 school. scores can be higher.

EC: if you have ECs in sports only it could be sort of dangerous although you can apply as an athlete. have you played violins or pianos, or that sort of thing? any nationwide awards?

Yeah, like dawncoming said, if you want to get into the best, you need to vary ECs and bump up the GPA a bit.

But the only really top school you’re applying to is Stanford. You’ll probably get into the other ones, especially if you’re a super athlete. If you get some art/music/academic ECs, you should apply to some better schools e.g. UChicago, maybe even the Ivies.

Chance me back!

Thank you. I’m just applying to Stanford because it’s a fantastic school in a fantastic location where the sport I love is huge. I’m not planning on getting in there, but I figured it’s worth a try.

To be honest I’m not yet at the point where I’m applying for colleges but I’m trying to set future goals and this is the way things have been working out (for GPA, without Freshman year I have a 3.4 UW and a 3.8 W, but I’m planning on having a 3.6 UW 4.0 W since that’s actually what I deserved last semester until my English teacher refused to enter an assignment I clearly did… so I guess I can pull it off in the future). I just needed a bit of confidence, wanted to know what I really need to get in. One last question: Will they ever look at your specialty for undergrad based on what you try to major in? I want to major in Chemistry or Biochemistry, and in the sciences, particularly Chemistry, I have had excellent grades. Would this help me major in a science? I also got a C+ in AP European History one semester, if I am not majoring in history will this be slightly more disregarded?

Also what kind of music applies to EC? I do play an instrument but how far do I have to go with that to make it a true EC?

I understand rm12345 saying I should apply to some better colleges (I’m going to apply to many Ivies, my dad said he’d pay for every app for them since he’d love for me to go to one), but there’s are the ones I listed mainly because I’m hoping I can get into these colleges and walk on to the volleyball team there, or for NYU which is D3 get recruited.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll get started adding what you suggested to my resume, and I’ll get some more community service hours.

We have very similar stats. I don’t have a stellar GPA either (in fact, it’s about the same as yours for UW and W)…and my dream school is USC!

Anywho, I think that if you just keep at your ECs and try very hard the remainder of this year, USC UCLA and UCSD are within your reach. Living in-state can’t hurt either for the UCs.

If you plan on going to NYU for D3 sports, definitely consider it. My friend just got into D3 swimming for NCAA to Stern, and he had a 3.5 UW.

As for the music, I guess, if you went to some honors band program like CBDA, you could put that on there. If you took band and marching band in high school, you can put that down also.

Sorry if I didn’t help you at all, I’m bad with this sort of stuff! ]:

That’s fine. I’m planning on getting my GPA up, I have time, but I just wanted a general idea of what I can have.

Actually I have an AP Test coming up, which if I get a 5 on the teacher will change my first semester grade to an A, which actually raises my GPA last semester to 4.2. So I guess I’ve got my chances.

Also thought I’d mention for USC, my club volleyball coach is the head coach there, I don’t know what that does if anything, just thought I’d mention.

I’d suggest varying your ECs and volunteer work. Colleges like to see dedication to a few subjects, sports, organizations, etc… but they also like to see that you branch out and try new things. If there’s a club you’ve been thinking about joining or a sport you’d like to try out, now is the time!

I don’t know much about UCSD, Pepperdine, or UCSB, but for the other schools:
UCLA - slight reach
Stanford - reach
NYU - target/slight reach
