-Notes:
–Schedule was poorly planned; I could’ve done more APs, by taking more summer school (Can take one year’s worth of courses each summer). Didn’t know much about scheduling, and ended up having a non-rigorous schedule. Hope ECs are good enough to help me…
–Will be taking Organic Chemistry at local university (not through dual-enrollment)
Wanted to take AP Lang in 11th grade, but wasn’t able to due to a schedule issue. Will take AP Lit this year. Hopefully, everything works out fine.
*Loved Calc and wish to take Calc 3 and Linear Algebra through a dual-enrollment program school offers. Many are suggesting that Spanish will be better for college apps. Want to take Calc 3 though. Suggestions?

-Marching Band (Since 9th grade) - Squad Leader as Senior; Have won multiple awards - MSBOA 1st division (all 3 years), Best Marching Band at Festival Disney 2014, Invited to UMich Big House to play, etc. (Mainly non-competitive; Rarely compete)

–Also worked as a lifeguard during summer between 10th and 11th grade; only one summer though. Should I include it? Would it lower my chances? (have other work to do this year, so didn’t apply for job)

Will be applying to…
UMich - CoE (for Chem) AND/OR Ross School of Business (might go through LSA; not sure yet)
MSU - CoE (for Chem
UC Berkely - Chemistry major
UCLA - Chemistry major
MIT (Not sure yet; huge reach)
UChicago - Chemistry major

Again, really appreciate your help! Will chance back!

Take the UC’s out of your list. There is no financial aid for OOS students at the UC’s. So unless your parents are willing to pay $55K per year, the UC’s aren’t an option.

Do you mean Chem or ChemE at UMich and MSU?

from my experience it looks like Berkeley, MIT, and U Chicago with be reaches for sure. I think you may have a shot at UM but they are super random about who they accept especially from my area (suburbs of chicago). One student who got into northwestern and wash u and Uchicago did not get into UM, but another student got in and was choosing between UM and UW madison. I think MSU is definitely a safety as it looks like, you know that based on your list. I think you may have a shot at UCLA but getting those test scores up will be a big thing. Hope that helps. chance me back! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/18686697#Comment_18686697

^ I agree particularly for Ross and CoE. There are many high applicants with high stat. I know a girl from in state got accepted at UMich CoE with 3.9/29 last year, but a boy with 3.8/33 from the same high school got rejected this year.

@billcsho ChemE for both of those. Thanks!

@Pugs1798 Thanks! Do you think my schedule workload will lower my chances significantly?

Also, I gained my NHS membership (completed all requirements) this year. But with so many applicants being NHS members, not sure if it’s improve my application immensely.

With GPA 4.0 and ACT 32 (UMich does not superscore) from in state, UMich CoE should be a high match. Are you female? UMich weight GPA more important than test score. Still, if you think you can improve your ACT score, you should retake.

@billcsho I’m male. Planning to retake the ACT (studying hard… aiming for a 34). My schedule workload isn’t great though (4.0 with few honors and AP classes); would that affect my chances significantly (Couldn’t take many due to shortened summer school time and Band/Orchestra taking up a whole hour of my 6 hour schedule). Thanks for your help.

Although you had only 2 AP, but with your senior schedule, your overall rigor is fine. You should be okay with current score but getting a higher ACT score would seal it.

@billscsho Alright. Really appreciate your help! Thanks!

UMich - CoE (for Chem) AND/OR Ross School of Business (might go through LSA; not sure yet) - high match/low reach
MSU - CoE (for Chem) - safety
UC Berkeley - Chemistry major - low/reach
UCLA - Chemistry major - low/reach
MIT (Not sure yet; huge reach) - reach
UChicago - Chemistry major - reach

Your course rigor is holding you back, but your ECs make up for it. Are you considering going ED at any of these schools. I would recommend going ED at MIT or UChicago if those are your dream schools. Your chances of admission will be doubled. Also, I would consider taking the ACT again to show schools that it’s ok that your course rigor wasn’t that hard… Your showing them that you are exceptionally smart despite your course rigor.

Chance me back?

@orlandomagic98 Thanks for your help! Just a quick question. Is applying ED to 2 schools allowed? Thanks

Thanks for the chance! Your stats are phenomenal. Great chance at UMich and easily MSU. I think you still have a pretty good shot at UC Berkeley and UCLA. MIT and UChicago are more of a reach but you’re still competitive. Good luck!

UMich - CoE (for Chem) AND/OR Ross School of Business (might go through LSA; not sure yet) : Match
MSU - CoE (for Chem: Safety
UC Berkely - Chemistry major: Low Reach
UCLA - Chemistry major: Low Reach
MIT (Not sure yet; huge reach): You’re right, it is but it’s a huge reach for everyone.
UChicago - Chemistry major: Same as MIT.

Chance back please!

If you do get 34+ in retake, your chance at UMich CoE would be greatly improved. The admission average last year for CoE was 33 and it should be at least stay at that score for this year.

For UMich: Ross–> definitely a reach, CoE high/match low-reach (assuming all As in math/science classes)

Course Rigor for your freshman and sophomore year are what bring you down a bit.

This is just my opinion though.

@Howardyuan Thanks for your help! Will chance back? Link? Thanks

@billcsho Thanks for your help!
