Hi! I know I’ve posted before but I just wanted to get some more opinions on how strong of an applicant I am for UNC Chapel Hill, since it is my number one choice for college.
Race: Indian
County : Wake (in-state)
Gender: Female
GPA: 4.5/5.0 (W) 3.9/4.0 (UW)
ACT: 35, 8/12 on essay
SAT: 1540 superscored (770 & 770), 1520 as the highest single score
AP’s: Psychology (5) Human Geography (4) Calculus AB (5) Calculus BC (4) English Lang (4) US History (4) Environmental Science (4)
Grades: I’ve gotten A’s in every class except for Calculus AB and Calculus BC, which I got B’s in.
Class rank: Last time I checked I was in the top 8% of my class, approximately 50/600. This was with a 4.475 GPA. I’m unsure where I stand with my 4.5, but I’m hoping I’m still within the top 10%.
Extracurriculars:
Key Club (9th-10th)
National Honors Society (11th-12th)
Food Ark (9th-12th), was the VP of Outreach and now I am VP of Special Projects. I helped our chapter win a $1500 grant to start a sustainable cooking demo series at school which I am super excited to be in charge of!
President of the Future Health Professionals (9th-12th)
DECA (Have placed almost every year and attended Internationals, VP of Communications)
FBLA
Piano (I’ve been playing for 10+ years and have been teaching piano lessons as well, I have a few awards for various competitions)
Dance (I’ve done Indian dances for as long as I can remember)
Youth teacher at a religious program
Part-time job at an ice cream shop
I’m getting a recommendation letter from a science teacher who I really adored and who only writes recommendations for 20 selected students, so hopefully that helps out my application as well. Thanks to anyone who reads this and I appreciate any and all input!
I’m no admissions officer but to me you’re looking like you got a pretty good chance being in-state as you are. Rough for me bc I’m applying OOS and am Indian as well so prayers up I guess.
UNC '23 here. I applied as an in-state, white male, and was accepted. The resume you’ve posted here appears to be more competitive than mine was in just about every aspect (higher SAT verbal and math, higher weighted GPA, more extracurricular leadership roles), so if I was accepted then you should be too, right? ?♂️ Haha, but with that said, the office of admissions claims to place a LOT of emphasis on personal essays and letters of recommendation when considering applications (or at least this is what was told to me while on campus tours/throughout the application process). So, I would definitely recommend spending quality time on your essays and asking at least one english teacher/tutor to help you revise them a few times before you submit your application. Like I said, you seem to be in very good shape with your current numbers, but no test score or GPA is a guranteed admission! Work hard on your application and you should be fine. Good luck.
Your stats look great- the only additional factor I would consider is your class rank at the end of your junior year, and the number of students from your school that are accepted at UNC each year- they usually keep the number in a very similar range. Say, they’ve accepted around 70 students from your school these past three years (the number should be easy enough to find, through Naviance). I’d say if your class rank would place you in the top 60th of that number (top 40), you’re almost certain to be in. Does NOT mean otherwise, if you’re not, this is just a little something I’ve observed over the past few years. Good Luck!!
