Applying as an out of state transfer student to Chapel Hill coming out of a Community College in NYC.

Intended Major: Political Science and I'll hopefully minor in Econ and/or Creative Writing.

Intended Career: Lawyer

GPA:3.75

Phi Theta Kappa

Honors Courses: Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Short Story, Global Politics. Also, some writing intensive courses.

Major: Liberal Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities.

Hooks: Nontraditional Student, Low Income, Decorated Veteran.

Military: I was an Army Paratrooper for five years and I served with the 82nd Airborne Division. I deployed to Iraq twice from Aug 06 till Oct 07 and Dec 08 till Dec 09.

E/Cs: I worked with a foundation in my school to help raise money for scholarships. I was the keynote speaker and gave an eight minute speech about my life to potential and current donors at a large scale event. I also sparingly work with the honor society, such as input on projects, and writing articles about events.

Volunteer: Toys for Tots drive at a public school. I also mentored at the same public school. On veterans day in 2010, I independently worked with a group of friends to raise over a thousand dollars for supplies which were purchased for a homeless veteran shelter.

I worked as a custodian for my first two years in CC, between 30 and 40 hours per week (hence why my GPA isn't in the 3.9-4.0 range)

Awards: Dean's List Fall 2011, Spring 2012 and after these two classes Fall 2012. SEEALL Academy Leadership Award (For Toys for Tots and Mentoring in the public school I worked in) I have a ton of military decorations including: Bronze Star for Valor in Combat, Combat Infantrymen Badge, Parachutist Badge(Jump Wings) and Foreign Jump Wings(Chilean). However, I don't know if these should be included on the common application? or if schools even care? I know the Bronze Star is relatively significant.

Recs: Three absolutely glowing. One from a strict professor that I took Eng-102 and LIB-200( Liberal Arts Capstone Course) with. Another from a professor I took ENG-275 Creative Non-fiction, who is submitting one of my pieces for publishing with the schools Literary Journal. My third is from the principle of the school I worked in, who will be talking about my work ethic and volunteer work for the school. I was contemplating contacting someone I was in the Military with for a rec, but I feel my records show exactly what I accomplished.

Good: I've taken 15 credits one semester and 6 credits during the intensive immediately thereafter, accumulating 21 credits for the whole semester. Additionally, I did this while working 30-40 hours a week and still made the Dean's List. I think this displays that I can handle an exuberant amount of work. The lowest grade on my transcript is a B and it was in an honors course with a huge workload.

Bad: I received an F in a Statistics summer intensive course. The professor was absent for a total of six classes and habitually came in hung over. He spent most of his time making inappropriate jokes, sexually harassing students, and grading me harder because I went to the department looking for him when he was absent one day and this tipped them off about his absences(which he did not report with them). I could not withdraw because I was a G.I Bill student and if I didn't take x amount of credits I would have lost my benefits and I wouldn't be able to pay my rent. I took it over and received a B+. Also, I won't be submitting SAT scores. Also, I have three W's on my transcript, because of my work responsibilities and Hurricane Sandy destroying my mothers house, I was forced to withdraw from classes to fit my work schedule and help with my mothers recovery.

ANY INPUT OR ADVICE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
