Is my URM status (hispanic) very beneficial?

Submit both, they will consider your highest score. And your URM status will help, but your GPA is pretty low for OSS standards (it is tough for an NC resident to get in with under a 4.0) You have a chance, but I would consider other schools as well, because there is no guaranteed in for OSS.

4.0 Weighted, and you’re OSS , so even with a 4.0 and URM status there is no guarantee, but try to get it up to 4.0+ and you will have a much stronger chance.

Maybe to give you a point of reference.
I’m hispanic and I was accepted into UNC Chapel Hill (and invited into the Honors Program).

As far as my scores, i had a 1440/2200. And my GPA, although my school doesn’t technically calculate them, was a 3.76. Only 2 people out of my class of 100 people have straight A’s (4.0 UW) – I go to a very rigorous school. So the GPA thing is also kind of relative to your school and how familiar the regional rep is with it.

I can’t tell if you’re a junior or a senior – based on what you said you seem to be a junior. Wait and take the SATs or the ACTs again next year; scores creep up over time. Additionally - DO NOT SLACK OFF ON THE ESSAYS. I believe the essays (+my recs) were what got me into the Honors program (i don’t think it had as much to do with hispanic in that case…). Have people who’s opinion you trust read over them. I had an ex-admissions officer from uchicago read mine and give me feedback. Start working on them early. Have the topic be meaningful to you and effective in conveying your personality and strong, positive traits you may have. If you need anything else feel free to PM me.

Thanks gc414!
Yeah I am a Junior, but I think my essays will be good as I have a few trusty people who will help me along the way.
I hope I can get my scores up to your level.
Great advice though.

randomhispanic, Are you going to Project Uplift this year? You should have been nominated by your school counselor. OOS can be nominated/selected to attend PU but most counselors may not know about the program. Anyway, you should get in touch with the multicultural recruitment office and ask them if there’s any chance of getting a spot for one of the weekends. Also, ask to be added to the multicultural student recruitment list so you will get an invite to events this year. You should get an invitation to UNC’s High School Honors Day next fall for minority students.

My son had a 4.01 GPA and SAT of 1370 and ACT combined of 31. In state resident 5 varsity letters, all kinds of extra activities, volunteer work, etc. AP and Honors classes at a good private high school and her was deferred at UNC- Chapel Hill. But my son is a while male so i think minority status is a big plus.

I too am a junior in high school and UNC is my #1 choice for college. My sister is a freshman there and she gave me some good advice: keep your focus mainly on doing well in your courses and not so much on getting into college, make sure you know the requirements to attend UNC (like what classes are a must/even recommended), get a well written letter of recommendation (she told me that for one of her hs classmates, this was probably an important factor of her admission).

As far as project uplift, I was nominated and am attending May 20th. Did that ever work out for you? If not, my cousin wanted to attend and I was informed that it is still possible to have a late nomination.

@randomhispanic: since you did get nominated to attend project uplift, I would say go to increase your chances since they invite you to other days, I guess it’s like a “hook” of some sorts…
