Hi! I am a rising senior applying to University of Florida this fall. I want to get in very very badly but I’m not sure if I’m up to scratch. Any advice for my transcript or comments on my chances would be appreciated!
I am 16 and grade skipped my junior year, so I haven’t taken the SAT recently. I am planning to take the August SAT. I took it in 7th grade as part of my Duke Tip participation and got an 1840, and I got 1320 on my PSAT last fall.
I have a 4.3 weighted GPA and a 3.7 unweighted. I have taken a large amount of AP classes, but only four of the exams (5 on APUSH, 5 on APLANG, 5 on APHUG, but only 4 AP Spanish). I have mostly A’s but maybe 6 Bs on my high school transcript on challenging classes like Calculus. I have 200+ volunteer hours coaching a youth soccer team, 50 volunteering at a veterinary clinic and 50 shadowing hours at that same veterinary clinic. I am beginning to volunteer at the critical care section of my local hospital and hope to get 100 hours there.
Extracurriculars//honors I was part of Davidson’s Youth Scholars.
Varsity soccer
Part of a lot of clubs-EHS, NHS, Ruriteens, Youth in Government, and Geography club.
I play the violin and have played for 9 years. I was first chair at the Jacksonville Youth Symphony Orchestra for several years and did 5 years of taekwondo, receiving my black belt. I am really passionate about going to UF, and while I know my stats are decent enough it’s a very competitive school. Do you have any advice on what I can do to help my chances?
@allie1013 whats your UF recalculated GPA. thats really what matters… your weighted GPA means nothing because every school district does it differently… (ie. having B+ & C+ grades, some schools count a B in AP as a 4.5 some count the B as a 5 for the GPA… ) so as you can see when people post their GPA’s weighted unweighted, its meaningless… its the GPA UF sees which is what you need to share… the SAT and ACT are what they are… anyway whats your UF Core GPA recalculated
@jhmoney my school ranks on a 5.0 scale-an A in an AP class is 5.0 B is 4.0 etc. I don’t know how to recalculate to UF. I have never gotten a C or D in my life, but I have a handful of Bs.
While I agree with @jhmoney that it would be better to see the UF recalculated GPA, I learned on an admissions tour that the UF GPA is very roughly halfway between the unweighted and high school weighted GPA. So I t his case, it appears to be about a 4.0. If that’s the case, it is low for UF. However, skipping a grade may alter the equation in UFs eyes. Also without a standardized test score it is hard to weigh the chances. The ECs look good. With more info, we can make a better assessment.
@allie1013 Almost how your school does it. AP AICE IB Dual Enrollment is A=5 B=4 and so on. For honors A=4.5 B=3.5. Plus grades do not count so B+ UF counts as a B and so on. Also remove any classes that are not core. They only count Math Science Social studies English and your foreign language classes. classes you don’t count would be like SGA, ART, PE, technology, cooking and even 9th grade physcology. That’s the UF RECALCULATED Gpa
@jhmoney another thing I am concerned about is residency. I am also applying to a few colleges in Virginia, where I live. However, my dad is a Florida resident. The high school I’ve graduated from is in Virginia. Should I put my dad’s address? Will it seem not legitimate because of the highshool I graduated from? I know they are really hard on OOS applicants.
@jhmoney hi! When you recalculated your uf gpa did you give every dual enrollment class a point? Example if you took enc1101 you add a point. But if you took marketing st the community college this would get 1 point or it’s not included since it is not a core class? I guess I’m asking if every dual enrollment class is treated like AP and gets added weight. Thank you
A couple things s on OOS, first, I would call admissions to see how they will treat your residency. No idea if you will qualify for in state but you should ask. Next, it is a fallacy that uf is harder on OOS applicants. The admit rate is about the same. I crunched the numbers in last year’s admissions annual report.
Also, if your recalculated is closer to a 4.3, which would make sense given your rigor and track record, you are in a much better position. But do the math on your GPA and it will give you a truer picture.
@funfit yes every dual enrollment is just like IB AP AICE… get 1 point. so A=5 B=4 a far as residency not sure legally how that works… if you can say you now live with dad not sure why you would be a Florida resident? I think you can claim that but not 100%
@funfi since your School looks like it almost follows the UF recalculated you might be closer to the 4.3 or even higher if you are able to pull out some classes that are regular 4.0 classes… just have to do the math… curious now how it comes out once you figure it out. should take you 20 minutes if you have all the classes you took including middle school if they were high school classes and core

@jhmoney just 1 more question. You said your child took 2 dual enrollment worth 1 credit so they count twice. What class was that?
Spanish 1 and College Alg. you count it twice since they are full hear high school classes equivilant…
so you count them twice… so in theory when she took 5 classes in high school plus her 2 dual enroll in semester 1 it looked like she had 9 classes for semester 1… then semester 2 she took 5 high school classes then 2 dual enroll but they were .5 credits so it was just 7 classes for semester 2 last year
@jhmoney I don’t know why I find this so confusing. So if the dual enrollment class was worth 1 full high school credit you count it twice and if the dual enrollment class was worth .5 you count it once? So if she got an a in Spanish 1 then I add 5 and 5 for that one class?
@funfit that’s correct. Yes count 2 5’s. But also have to divide it as it was 2 classes. But it is like taking it 2 times. Yes.
@funfit similar to algebra honors. It’s one grade but you count it twice since it’s 1.0 and a full year class so it’s 2x5. =10.
@jhmoney I thought honor was only .5? So algebra honors would be high school so add .5 and .5 so the class gets 1. So algebra honors with an A would be 5 points. And AP calc would be 6 points if she got an A?
@jhmoney ok if I did it correct through the summer of junior year my daughter has a weighted gpa of 8.1 and recalculated uf gpa would be 4.925. Fingers crossed I did it right. Lol
@funfit I’m going to go out in a limb and say you did it wrong. 4.95 is almost unheard of considering 5.0 is the highest. . That means your daughter didn’t take any honors classes.
