Volunteer work
- (3 Years) I got the opportunity to work in an electrical engineering lab with a college professor. I got to learn Soldering, continuity, the tools used in electrical engineering ,and team work. He is also teaching me how to design my own circuit board, And I got to be involved with one of his student projects. He said he will write me a letter, but so far he has been busy to even give me on.
So what is your take? What do I have to do
We have lots of time, the deadline is February 1st. I’m starting my essays early to make them perfect. But yeah what do you guys say.
Sorry but you will have very little to no chance. The average GPA across all schools at UM is 3.87 Unweighted. The average ACT is 32-34. The Engineering numbers however, are even higher (if not the highest in the University). OOS applicants are also severely more competitive.
I highly encourage you to apply to other schools that are closer to your profile, best of luck!
Based on US News and what not
Michigan is a bit better than Texas. However, I should not judge based on rankings.
The acceptance rate for Michigan is higher than taxes. Michigan with about 30%, and Texas with about 16%. I’am hearing different sources about how Out of state is harder than instate student to get in or vice versa. I do like Michigan, even if I have to bear the cold. What about scholarship?
@SchoolAdventurer well what other schools? UT Austin wont work,what else?
@jaysaini8 I’m trying to go into business, so I don’t know what engineering schools are suitable. However, I think you’d have a great shot at Kettering. Kettering is college that is specifically for GM automobiles, which will help you work and go to school at the same time. It is a very safe from a job-security viewpoint, and you’ll be working for GM quickly.
Are you in-state? If so, explore this school.
@SchoolAdventurer no I’m from Washington (OOS). I’m not really a fawn of flint Michigan. What else can you say? According to Common Data Set (2016-2017) Michigan took about 19% (I rounded) with those who had a GPA range of 3.24-3.74. I have met the standards for the ACT (as 74% had a composite of 30-36). English was 79%, and Math was 69% for those who had a range of 30-36
Here is the link if you want to look (it accurate)

The reason for lower admission rate at UT Austin is mainly due to the small numbers of seats left after in-state auto-admission. UMich views GPA as most important and that is something you are weak at. Test scores are just important but not as much. It is a pretty high reach for you. If you are not a recruited athlete or for certain majors (e.g. music performance), those admitted with lower GPA may not be relevant to you. Even for those who are well within the mid 50 range in test scores and GPA, the admission rate from OOS is not much above 20%.
Even people who met the number or exceeded them were not admitted. Like @billcsho said, the OOS admission is significantly harder than in-state.
Total First Year Student Applications 15,780
% Offered Admission 21%
Median HS GPA for Admitted First Year Students 3.9
Median ACT for Admitted First Year Students 33
Median SAT for Admitted First Year Students 1410
As you can see, the acceptance rate for engineering is very tough! median unweighted GPA is a 3.9, and a 3.2 is far below. You can’t read into range data, look for average and median data, which is far more reliable. The University of Michigan is an amazing school that sets the best standards, and often times has to defer/deny people who are very qualified.
I really wish you best of luck, it definitely won’t hurt to apply. You never know! GO BLUE!!!
@billsxho
@SchoolAdventurer
Let’s wait till this semester ends of my high school to see where my gpa is at. What if I top (at the max) a 3.6? And yes he gpa of 3.2 to 3.6 is relevant to because Admission knows very well not everyone can achieve a 3.8, because teachers are bad sometimes (My old high school sucked, no one really cared). So in return they had a high ACT/SAT score. Essay really help and so do extra curriculars. I retaking the test in February because they do take the feburary exam. So?
Btw I’m not like upset or anything I’m just stating what I have in my control
Ps I was told that low are viewed equally along with Michigan resident (crazy right)
Are there any schools in the top 10 that I have a chance of getting in? That’s fun to go to
UIUC and Purdue are ok but not really a fawn of
Oh yes I do plan on applying
3.6 you will have a shot!
@SchoolAdventurer Alright then, I will take the challenge. Thank you so much for telling me the reality
3.5?
No problem dude, we are all just trying to GO BLUE! If you have a 3.5+ you will have a small chance, but definitely exists.
@SchoolAdventurer Thank you so much mate. I’ll take the challenge, I think I can get a 3.5 may be 3.6 the semester. In the meanwhile I hope you get into the Ross school of business.
Have a nice night
oh yes GO BLUE
