Please let me know, thanks! Also, do you think these stats are good enough for the college of engineering too?
Your stat is within range. LSA and CoE are low reach and reach for your from OOS due to admission rate. There are around 50k OOS applicants.
@billcsho Aw dang, why’s the acceptance rate so low for OOS? I know low reach isn’t bad and that I’ll get a few more EC’s but still find it strange how low OOS is for Umich. Is this how it is for a lot of universities?
It just keep getting lower and lower as the applicant pool is getting larger and larger. Also, the yield rate is going up, so they need to admit even less students to avoid over enrollment. The OOS admission rate is around 20-25% depending on schools. Most top colleges have admission rates going lower as more students are applying to them. In addition, the number of schools each student apply is getting larger year after year which makes the applicant pool for each school larger and larger too, so the admission rate has to go down.
@billcsho Dang lol that’s pretty insane. Kinda off topic but would you happen to have an estimate on how my chances would be for Georgia Tech? That’s another school I’m interested in and I’d just want to get an idea of where I’m at comparatively
You can post in their forum to ask. Or you can look up their CDS online.
Here is the thing that seems to stand out with OOS applicant number game: Let’s say U of M receives 55k applications, of which 15k might be in-state. I believe the overall accepted number was around 14k, with 7k admitted. The in-state acceptance is 40% or 6,000. That leaves 8k to be accepted out of the remaining 40k OOS or 20% acceptance. Of those, I’m guessing they like to have every state represented where possible, thus diluting the OOS acceptance further.
So while the overall acceptance rate is 25%-ish, in-state applicants fare better. While these numbers may be flawed, the trend should prove helpful.
@098123Student There is no need to speculate. All numbers are available in the Michigan Almanac. Your numbers are way off.
@billcsho
Evidentiary to support trend: in-state students fare better.
https://record.umich.edu/articles/admissions-reviews-more-55000-applications-fall
Number of 12th graders in Michigan: 115,696
Number of in-state applicants U-M received: 10,959
Acceptance: 42.4% in single state
https://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/MDE_Fast_Fact_379573_7.pdf
Number of 12th graders in the nation: ?
Number of out of state applicants U-M received: 35,783
Number of applicants living in other countries U-M received: 8,758
Acceptance: 24.5% spread across 49 states and international residents
Is it supposed to be a surprise that in state students have a better shot with admissions?
@turtle17 The OP asked:
“Aw dang, why’s the acceptance rate so low for OOS?”
It just seemed post 7 and 8 were disagreeing about this, and I was confused why. I realize the OP was surprised by the low acceptance rate for OOS, and I’ve noticed isn’t the first person on CC to not realize how hard it is to get into UM OOS.
I don’t disagree about the difference in admission rate. I am saying there are actual data available in the Almanac that I don’t see why one would just use makeup numbers in #6. Now he has changed to use outdated numbers in #8. See my other thread for the link to the latest Almanac. More updated than the Almanac, there were over 59000 applicants for 2017 freshmen and there have been around 10000 in state applicants each year. It has nothing to do with the total number of HS graduates in the nation or in Michigan.
agree on the almanac and no need to estimate when it is all there.
