Very nice, I can say. SAT score is not that impressive, though. Otherwise, more than enough in extracurricular activities. GPA is important too and you’ve achieved that, as long as you were doing that for long.

U of M’s admission rate in 2012 was 49 per cent, so think positive. More than a thousand come from California alone, along with New York and Texas. Very prestigious.

Well to make you feel better I got in with 1840 SAT College of Engineering. 3.7 GPA

Just before you got blown away with the above responses, I want to let you know that the admission rate at UMich has dropped significantly in the last few years. It was never 49% in 2012 anyway. It was 37% in 2012 and 42% in 2008. It has further dropped to 33% in 2013 and now around 31%. The current mid 50 ACT is 2040-2260.
Don’t compare yourself with some extreme cases unless you have a hook. Do look at the average admission data and see how do you stand.
For OP as an oos student, UMich LSA would be a reach but not without hope. For CoE, it would be reach that is not very likely to happen considering the lower and lower admission rate unless you are in state.

Correction. The 2014 admission rate for UMich is around 30% (~20% for CoE).

my intention was not to say that 1840 is enough, I do have hooks, I am just saying its not impossible and that he should have hope. All these statistics are intimidating, my sole intention is to just let him know that its possible. Make yourself seem like an individual and not one of those statistics up there because I’m almost sure about half of the 70 - 80% of students who get rejected have those same stats.
