I am thinking of applying as a music major or an education major because I thought that since my gpa is really awful, I need to let colleges know that it's because I loved the ECs that I did. I want them to know that because I loved doing my ECs so much, I got distracted from my school work... But I'm not so sure. What should I apply as? Or should I apply undecided if I'm not completely sure

Schools that I am interested in:
-UPenn CAS (would apply ED)
-Georgetown
-Carnegie Mellon
-Boston College
-Johns Hopkins
-Dartmouth

I would also love some other schools that you think I would have a decent shot at!

Based on everything you’ve told us, you’re an extremely competitive applicant…except for the GPA. Unfortunately, although top colleges LOVE lots of clear passion in ECs, the most important factor in your admission is your academic ability; your SAT score demonstrates your smarts, but your GPA pales in comparison to the thousands of 4.0’s they receive each year. The fact that you “got distracted” from schoolwork won’t cut it for them. That, and the fact that you’ll be competing against a ton of Asian applicants, will significantly lower your chances.

BUT!
Applying under a music major is a wonderful idea, especially if that’s really your focus and what you love doing. I would advise you look into some music schools (e.g. Berklee).

That being said…
UPenn CAS: high reach
Dartmouth: high reach
Georgetown: mid reach
Carnegie Mellon: mid reach
Johns Hopkins: mid reach
BC: low reach / high match

I hope I wasn’t too harsh here, because you seem like an intelligent, dedicated person, and I know that wherever you go for college, you’ll flourish. Good luck in the application process! :)

Wow thank you so much for your response! You weren’t harsh at all! I fully realize that my gpa is very low but I was just thinking about trying anyways. Thanks again!

bump bump bump
