Chance me for William & Mary! (In-State)

I’m currently a junior researching colleges to apply to in the fall, and I am really really interested in William & Mary. I’m pretty sure it’ll be my first-choice school.

In-State (Northern VA, so pretty competitive)
Pre-Med

ACADEMIC INFO:

Weighted GPA: around 4.1, I think 4.08 to be exact (it could’ve been higher but I really screwed up my grades in 10th grade, and I will be mentioning this in college apps so colleges know that it’s definitely not going to happen again)
My weighted GPA for 10th grade was 3.8, while for 11th grade it’ll be 4.5/4.6, so I think seeing that upward trend will help my case? Tell me if I’m wrong.

ACT: got a 34 both times I took it, but superscored to a 35 (this is better than my SAT, so I will not be submitting my SAT score anywhere)

10 AP classes
2 in 10th grade (A- and B )
4 in 11th grade (A, B+, A-, A)
4 in 12th grade (TBD)

I don’t want to submit my AP Exam scores in 10th grade, and I am waiting on the scores for 11th grade, and I am much more confident about those.

I took Spanish only for 3 years, but William & Mary recommends 4; how much will that impact my application? To make up for not taking Spanish 4, I am taking an online Spanish course (through a university on edX.org) for 4 months over the summer before senior year, and my counselor and/or I will be mentioning this somewhere in my application this fall.

Also, if anyone has any information about William & Mary’s optional interview, that would be really helpful since I’m planning on signing up for a virtual one, but I have no idea what they ask/talk about.

EXTRACURRICULARS INFO

  • President of 2 global health / medicine clubs at my high school
  • leadership position on a community program to teach kids STEM (I also helped to found this program)
  • dance for the past 10 years (in one of my teacher’s most advanced classes, my dance graduation is next summer)
  • intern with a psychiatrist
  • hospital volunteering (100-150 hours)
  • robotics team, marketing leader for 4 years before I quit robotics in 11th grade
  • representative for my school for a non-profit organization related to global health

I think you have a reasonable shot. You can add a supplemental statement to address your 10th grade grades. At the time of application, you’ll have your 11th and possibly first semester 12th grades to show your renewed focus and commitment.

Definitely sign up for an interview. My daughter had her interview last summer. It was with a rising senior and he asked one or two questions to get the ball rolling and the rest of the interview was very conversational. Be prepared to convey your enthusiasm for the school and learning in general and you will be fine. Also, think of one or two thoughtful questions because they will ask if you have any questions.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
By any chance are you/your daughter comfortable enough to share the interview questions / more info about the interview in general? Either this thread or DM is fine

hi  i interviewed last summer and would definitely recommend it! it was super relaxed and conversational. here’s a page from the W&M admission blog with a bunch of questions they might ask so you can better prepare yourself https://wmblogs.wm.edu/admiss/the-inside-scoop-on-interviewing/

from what i can remember, i got asked about:

  • my extracurriculars
  • to describe my high school
  • my favorite project i’ve ever done
  • a challenge i’ve worked through
  • if i had an extra hour in the day, what would I do with it
  • what i would give a TED talk on

Yes, I think my daughter had the question about “what would you do with an extra hour in the day”. And also, “if you could design a college course, what would the topic be and why”.

Thank you so much both of you! I have my interview next week and I’m nervous ?
