Chance Me (From CC to ...)

Before I list my stats, I want to expand a bit on my situation because it's an uncommon one.

I graduated from high school in 2007 and matriculated at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. I was clearly not focused and not ready to handle living independently; ended up averaging a sub-2.0 GPA in 4 semesters there, was dismissed from the school in Spring 2010.

I returned home and have been attending Nassau Community College (in NY) full-time while working 20-25 hours per week (not sure if my work commitment would be worth mentioning on my apps?). I have a 4.0 GPA through roughly 25-30 hours of coursework at the community college.

Variety of EC's like JV/Varsity high school sports, honor society, music honor society, several volunteer positions. I've worked as a web designer for about 5 years, starting when I was a junior in high school.

On to the stats...

~3.8 weighted GPA in high school (about 93.5 on a scale of 0 to 100; my counselor at the time told me that was what it converted to)

2180 on SAT I (750 verbal, 730 math, 700 writing)

Several AP courses taken in high school, but the only tests I actually scored a 4 or better on was AP English in both my junior and senior year.

I want to transfer to a top-25 school. A few schools that I'm eyeing are Columbia, U Chicago, UPenn, Cornell, NYU. And the second part of my question is, if I don't have a good shot at being accepted at those schools given my track record, where do you see me going?

I want to go pre-med if that has any effect on the decision at all.

Have you checked the websites for all these schools to make sure you qualify as a transfer applicant after attending college for 3 yrs? I know that Columbia does not recommend it:

[Transfer Admission | Columbia University Office of Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/admissions/applications/transfer.php)

And it may be difficult at UChicago as well since they have the Core.

Premed doesn’t make much difference in transferring as you can major in anything and take premed coursework. However, for premed, you do need to be concerned about your grades (all grades will be used in your calculated gpa, even if you retake a class) and the fact that not too many premed classes should be taken at a CC.

Dont colleges look at your cumulative GPA instead of the GPA of the last institution you attended?
If so then I doubt you have a good chance at any of the schools you listed.

No chance at any top 20 school (not to mention that you have too many hours). Your cumulative GPA is in the high 2’s. Sorry man. Just go into a top 50 school, dominate and go to an ivy for grad school.

I appreciate the responses. I hadn’t really thought of it like that. I had assumed that they would look at the progress I’ve made and at my pre-UMich performance and be willing to take a shot on me, but from a cumulative standpoint my GPA is poor to say the least.

Any recommendations on schools I might consider?
