Chance Me? Georgetown, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT

Hello! I wanted to see what my "chances" might be in applying to some top schools (G'town, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT). (Please note, these are my reach schools) -

White female, from SC
Public Magnet school, top 10 in the nation

GPA 5.009 weighted, 3.83 unweighted (out of 4)
Class does not rank, but I'm probably at the top 10% out of 150 students
Almost all As (2 Bs total my high school year, and all of my grades this year are 95 and above)

SAT: 2100 (720 math, 720 writing, 680 CR) - I just took them again in October, and expect at least my CR to go up
SAT II: 680 lit, 590 Spanish (taking these again in November. I didn't study the first time, but I expect them to go up to at least 700 and above 600, respectively)
^SATs are obviously the weak point of my application (although they're still better than my ACT)

APs: sophomore: Psych (5), Euro (4), junior: Eng Lang (5), Spanish Lang (4), US (4), Calc AB (3)
APs this year: Gov, Macroecon, Stats, Environmental, Spanish Literature, English Lit
I've also taken Pre-cal (10 grade), Chinese 101 (12 grade), and Chinese 102 (12 grade) as dual enrollment credits
I'll have 12 total APs and 3 Dual Enrollments
All other courses are honors. I'm taking 10 classes this year.
Note: I also skipped some classes to take more advanced classes. I took precal over the summer. I've also skipped Spanish 4/5 to take both AP Spanish classes. I started French 1 my junior yr, and skipped 2 so that I could take Fr 3 this year. I also dropped study hall this year, which no one at my school does, so that I could take other classes.

ECs: Key Club (9-12) (Secretary, President District Lieutenant Gov <pretty big leadership role) (this role has caused me to travel as far as California for conventions)
Varsity and Club swim (9-12) (captain)
Student Gov (9-12) (I have an exec position; I coordinate all comm service for the school)
Nat Honors Soc (11-12) (Pres)
Speech and Debate (12)
Spanish Honors Soc (11-12) (tutor)
Sunday School teacher (10-12) (volunteer teaching, second grade Communion class)
Summer job: Lifeguard last summer
^basically, most of my apps reflect strength in community service and leadership

Some school-wide awards, also AP Scholar w/ Distinction
Was governor of Palmetto Girls State, which is a pretty big thing. (I'm also discussing this in my apps)

Recs: All recommendations are really strong. I rebuilt my school Key Club, so one rec is talking about that. My Spanish teacher of 3 yrs is talking about my love of languages (I take 3 at school, and have been teaching myself Korean).
I also have a 2-year senior thesis on constructed language that I am promoting in my apps, and that one of my recs is about.

Essays: all very strong, but not heart-wrenching (I don't have any "disadvantages" in my life that should have worked against me that I can talk about)

I'm planning to apply into linguistics or foreign policy/political sciences. I've also included in my apps that I would like to work in international community service work as a career. For example, refugee relief with the UN appeals to me.

Thanks so much everyone, and I know there are a thousand of these "chance me"s floating around, but I'd really appreciate some feedback!

Oh, I should just throw it out there - I’m taking the most rigorous course load possible at my school, and I have upward of 300 recorded service hours.

I think you have a shot at Gtown and less of one at all of the others. I would recommend EA GT because that will give you the best chance of acceptance into one of those schools and RD to the others. Chance back please <a href=“Chance me TUFTS ED- I will chance back - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1695135-chance-me-tufts-ed-i-will-chance-back-p1.html</a></p>

Thanks so much! I am doing EA for GU and regular for the rest, since GU is my top : )

To be honest…
Your stats are pretty weak, and although you had a pretty rigorous course load throughout the year, it would be very helpful to get the subject tests up, as well as the regular SAT. I’d say your strongest part in your ecs is being lieutenant governor, which is a really big role. Your ECs are fairly strong, but I’d say it’d be tough at HYPM. Especially MIT as your application doesn’t show too much of an interest in STEM. Georgetown EA is definitely your best bet. Out of curiosity, was going to California for ICON? or California DCON? Something like that?

Georgetown requires 3 SAT 2s. They understand that some people may not be able to get 3 in before the EA deadline, but they still strongly recommend 3. They also require you send all your scores, so you’d have to send both the Lit and spanish scores.

@JesWright1996‌ - You can’t apply to MIT unless you take Math and Science SAT IIs. That being said, I don’t think it’s worth your trouble to take them, unless you can score 750+ on both, it’s unlikely that MIT would seriously consider your application - as @razumikhin‌ commented, you lack both the scores and STEM focus MIT would be looking for.

As far as your chances for HYPS - I think your school counselor could much better assess your odds than anyone here. To be honest, your current SAT, SAT II, and AP scores are rather low for these schools, and surprisingly low for someone in the top 10% of one of the top 10 high schools in the country. It could be that your school is so highly regarded that this would take precedence, but no one on CC is going to know if that is the case or not.

Thanks everyone! I kind of threw MIT in the mix out of curiosity, and because I know they have pretty good ling/lang r program, but GU is my top and I’m really trying for Harvard/Princeton, because all 3 have outstanding foreign lang/linguistics/foreign service departments.

I’m thinking that when I get my SAT scores back in 2 weeks that all scores will be above 700. Unfortunately I know that my SAT II scores don’t quite cut it, but I’m still retaking some that can carry over to RD if I don’t make early for GU. I’m not a very great standardized test taker, which is why I can still be at the top of my class (with grades) and still not be perfect on SATs (I’m trying!).

As for Cali, I was there for ICON, and it was amazing!

Your stats are mediocre for these caliber schools. If your 2-year senior thesis is required at your school, it is really nothing special.
