Chance Me- Georgetown SFS Fall 2019

Hi! I am a current HS junior applying to Georgetown SFS for undergrad, starting fall 2019, from a highly ranked Jesuit college prep.

I am on the executive board of my school’s Model UN team, and serve as our Secretary General. We are one of the top teams in the country and I have won numerous awards. I will be traveling abroad this summer to compete internationally as well as study International Relations abroad. Also this summer, I will be teaching a Model UN camp to grade school students in my area.
Additionally, I am the Opinion Editor of my school’s newspaper, and we have seen tremendous growth in readership for my page(online, so we can track) since I started.
I have worked on two congressional campaigns, one of the top watched primaries, and one of the most competitive general elections(DCCC red to blue status). For the campaign I am on now, the candidate is an adjunct professor at Georgetown and she has offered to write a letter of recommendation.
I am one of five nationally elected leaders for a youth political organization, which requires an immense time commitment. Additionally, because of this, I am an alum of a program to train political operatives.
I have volunteered regularly with an organization dedicated to getting fresh produce to underserved areas(food deserts), and currently work in their policy sector, helping people navigate federal aid programs.

I’ve talked to my college counselor, and she believes all of these are assets to my application, but my grades will be the biggest challenge in getting accepted.
Assuming nothing changes in my last weeks of school, I will end with around a 3.5 cumulative. I am awful at math and science, but my grades in social studies and English are stellar. I will have taken AP Comparative Government, AP Language and Composition, AP English, and AP European History, as well as honors French, which will hopefully help with SFS.
My test scores are good. I have a 34 ACT and 800s on US History, World History, and Literature.

Additionally, I have worked with the Director of the Georgetown IOP and will be meeting with him around application time. I don’t know if this, working with a professor, and coming from somewhat of a feeder school with help my chances. My essay is(at least in my opinion) is very good. I just don’t know if this will be enough to make up for my GPA, and if I should apply early(I know I won’t get in early) so they could read my application twice, or go regular.

Your gpa isn’t as strong as some others. But scores are great. As a point of reference. But only one point. My d was wl. 1540 sat 35 act 4.0uw val of her school. 13 aps. Capt of a variety team sport etc. so. It’s very competitive. But essays recs and ecs are super important too. So you have a chance.

You’re definitely an extremely pointy applicant. I wouldn’t worry too much about the GPA, especially if your counselor is able to explain that you’re more talented in non-STEM fields. The ECs you have are extremely competitive for SFS, and having such in-depth MUN and political campaign experience is definitely something that will stand out. Write an excellent essay and be sure to explain why your GPA doesn’t line up with the rest of your application. Best of luck!
