is that SAT score out of 1600? if so, that's a very good score, even if it's not ivy material.

i'm also a virginian. look at mary washington. it's a great, underrated virginia school. st. mary's in maryland. washington college in maryland. american u (if that SAT is out of 1600). centre college. alleghany college. rochester. again, this changes depending on what the SAT score is out of. please specify!

yeah its out of 2400.I've done better by like 300 points on the PSAT but I didnt sleep well the night before and the air conditioning was broke at the place i took my test at. But those are just excuses I understand. I did a practice ACT booklet and liked the format of that better so i'll give the ACT a try.

Back on topic: chances and other recommendations?

Taking the ACT is a great idea - it's quite difference from the SAT, and for some people, much easier. My ACT score is equivalent to a score 150+ points higher than my SAT score (if that makes sense).

Your chances look pretty good for the schools you've mentioned - I don't really know enough about similar schools to give recommendations, but it seems like you're on the right track in regards to admissions.

i'll still stick with mary washington - it might be a reach for you - centre, washington, and st. mary's. jmu will be a reach, and don't bother with american or rochester. try somewhere like...shepherd, radford, wvu, shenandoah.

Thanks. I like the architecture at Washington and yeah I figured JMU will probably be a reach for since the average GPA of the freshman entering class is like a 3.7

My opinion is that you will be admitted to all three. Eagle Scout is quite impressive. Congratulations. That alone shows a very long commitment. Your GPA is fine for the school's listed. Take the ACT, and SAT one more time. James Madison is the best of the school's that you have on your list. With your URM status, you will be fine. Good job and best of luck.

Mary Washington is an great school if you are looking for a strong school with a small size. You will have no problems getting in Mary Wash either. I have a sibling at both Mary Washington and JMU. Trust me, you are so in each school on your list.

Please report back because I feel strongly about this one. I want to know how things end up working out for you.

i only suggest radford as a backup. don't get to snobby about it!

vcu has a few programs - medical and arts, in particular - that are hot lately. it's getting more and more selective.

i would contest the fact that you are "so in" to jmu - next to uva and william and mary, it is our most selective in state school, and they will be turned off by your SAT scores as a bigger school, and your gpa puts you probably just below their midrange. mary washington is a good alternative because they are smaller and will look at your application more holistically. i really think that mary wash is the school for you. i agree that i'd like to know where you end up - message me on here and let me know!

"vcu has a few programs - medical and arts, in particular - that are hot lately. it's getting more and more selective. "

Yeah I want to do political science or history so hopefully they wont overlook me with the countless people applying to their medical and arts programs. I also intend to do the optional essays in the app to show that im interested in the school since its my first choice.

yeah ill definitely let youll guys know where i stand come this spring when acceptance letters are mailed
and ill post my ACT results when I take them
