Chance me. International transfer. India. MIT. Stanford. Caltech

Hi,
I'm an international transfer student from India. Applying for fall 2009.

Chance me for: MIT, Caltech, Stanford.

Financial aid - Not needed but will apply for it.

School - CBSE 10th 90%
CBSE 12th 84%
College - 8.1 for 10 GPA doing B.Tech Computer Science first year.

Obviously I'll be applying for a major in comp. sci.

Extra stuff - School cricket and basket ball teams.
College Cricket team.
Research Project on self cooling engine. Applied for patent and should hopefully get one :). (Did this when in college)
Major contributor to open source movement. Two apps under my name :) (From my 11th std.).
SAT II - Math 700, Physics 790, Chemistry 740.
TOEFL ibt - 111/120
School rank three in Chemistry and Computer Science.
Several inter-school prizes in athletics and sports (Shot-put and Basket ball tournaments)
Several intra-school prizes first in Micro-teaching in physics, first for developing software for a middle school math class competition.
A very sucky all India rank of 1048 in the national cyber olympiad and several other sucky ranks which I don't want to share :(.

I did study for the IIT-JEE exam and guess had an extra weight on my shoulder cause my dad really wanted me to get in there. I didn't do well on the exam day (happens right? :() and sucked there too.

I guess I can write really good essays and have really good recs.
I felt the ones I wrote for Caltech should be good enough for them to send in the transfer exams. I think they put a very big factor on how you do those transfer exams...

I'm hoping for the best. Big fan of anything is possible.

So anybody out there, please chance me.

Thank you.

PS - CC's forums are like really confusing. I hope this post is in the right place :P

Stuff I'm doing right now - Sun Microsystems' Code for Freedom, national level college competition for creating open source application. Has two rounds, got through the first which is a proposal round.
Participating in Microsoft Imagine Cup in Robotics, Software Design and Photography. Real good chance of getting through to the second round for all three.

Misc - Learnt Python and Java during my summer before college. Got the Sun Certified, Java Developer and Java programmer Certification.

Am an amateur astronomer.

ok, 62 views and nobody has any advise? Come on guys please. Chance me.

Anybody at all????

I think the problem is that no one can evaluate you without understanding the significance of your college GPA because here in the United States we have it on a 4.0 scale. Because I don't know how good an 8.1 out of 10 in India is I really can't evaluate whether or not you can get into those schools because I don't know if that is a 3.0 or a 3.5 or a 4.0 here. Also, your SAT I scores are probably more important than SAT II's.

Ramen is correct. Also, as none of those schools is need blind to internationals, asking for aid will reduce your chances of getting into by a lot. Why on earth would you apply for aid you don't need?

Also keep in mind a subject of much discussion here, if you are doing this because you think you can stay and work in the US, don't do it. You most probably can't.

probably no chance for MIT because the SAT II scores will kill you. I know tons of people got 800s for those three subjects without even preparation.

Stanford does not give aid to international students in transfer admission.

Caltech...I know ICHO and IPHO gold medalists got rejected from there, and its lack of fund is famous around the globe(you can tell from their viewbook...) so good luck.

Yeah, you get many views but people aren't responding because we don't really know what to say... or at least I don't. Sorry! Like ramen and hmom said, we don't really know the GPA equivalence.

I would still say just go for it. You have to try to know. In my opinion, your grades ARE important, but the essays are the biggest admittance factor.

Diablo: Really? No chance? Is the SATII given in languages other than English (maybe he took it in English as a second language)? If he learned English, it would maybe be understandable.... or maybe not... if international student admittance is more competitive.... I wouldn't know.

MIT is NOT need-blind for transfer/international applicants?

OK so this the thing. The college I'm doing right now is the next best in the country after the IITs, like rank 9 in the country I think. So, an 8.1 is something of a good score although there are a few people who got more than 9. I'm am working hard to boost it in the second semester. So I guess I'll have to leave this part to the adcom.

From MITs website:
""Non-native English Speakers
(For students whose native language is not English, who have been using English for less than five years or who do not speak English at home.)

You have two options: you may take the tests required of native English speakers, or you may take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and two SAT II subject tests, one in math (Level 1 or Level 2) and one in science (Physics, Chemistry, or Biology E/M).""

So yeah, either the TOEFL or the SAT. I don't like to write essays on paper like in the SAT and so I just went for the TOEFL. I just took the SAT II exams in school just for the heck of it. I didn't apply for freshman admissions but realized this was a very big mistake and so am applying for transfer admissions.

Caltech doesn't offer aid for international transfer while MIT does encourage everyone to apply for aid regardless of background and so I put that line up.

Ok, so what do you guys think of the EC's. Are they good? What do many of the top people at MIT or other schools do as EC's in their freshman year? Like over here, not many people do these kinds of things at least before their third year at college. Most of the people including the best guys who go to the IITs usually aren't interested in doing this kinda stuff immediately in the first semester of the first year.

And I did take the SAT II's in English, I don't think they are given in any other language in India. English is my second language from school.

So leaving out the GPA and the financial aid part what do you guys think?

And by the way, thanks guys for the replies. Really appreciate it.

any Indians out there applying for transfer this fall to any of the US schools?

Anybody have any thoughts about my EC's??
Please..
Thanks

@hmom: I thought that MIT was need-blind for Internationals as well

High Reach, as it is for anyone

Almost every student here get 800s for physics, chemistry and math II
but we are Chinese so that might be a little different...

I think all SATs are in English..

And yes, MIT is always need-blind.
