I have an on par sat with what IU considers there middle 50% range (1180), but my main concern is my gpa. I have a 3.295 cumulative gpa, which I’ve worked really hard to get up from freshmen year of high school. My freshmen year sucked in terms of academically and personally but since then I’ve had 3.7 every semester and then my last semester of junior year ended with a 4.112. I’ve taken a mix of honors and AP classes every year and have been very successful. I also go to a high school in Indiana that IU knows is very competitive. I spend 5 days a week in colorguard and winterguard year round, so I’m always busy (practice is 3 hours a day during the week and then 6 hours on Saturday). But as I said my ultimate concern is gpa, looking just at that might say my academic record is less then stellar but if you look year to year, I’ve shown so much progression and growth in my grades in the past 3 years, will that be enough?
I think if you can explain the dip in your grades using the personal statement, that might be helpful. Also I think your admittance will depend a lot upon the rigor of your coursework, given your GPA. Have you taken the hardest classes that you can? Are there any areas in which you have avoided the most difficult track? Let us know how it goes!
